NAPERVILLE, Ill. – North Central’s Mike Boettcher, Illinois Wesleyan’s Scott Wenzel and North Central’s Caleb Bednarz were named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Football Players of the Week Monday.
Boettcher, a senior running back from Frankfort, Ill., and Lincoln-Way East High School (Entrepreneurship major), ran for 186 yards on 15 carries and four touchdowns during the Cardinals’ 61-14 win over Millikin on Saturday. Boettcher tied a North Central record for single-game rushing touchdowns and posted a season-high single-game rushing yardage total for the Cardinals. He led a North Central effort which produced season highs of 461 rushing yards and 669 total yards.
Wenzel, a senior defensive back from Arlington Heights, Ill., and Rolling Meadows High School (Business (finance) major), totaled 11 tackles, including six solo, and one forced fumble during the Titans’ 24-12 win over Elmhurst on Saturday. Wenzel was part of an Illinois Wesleyan defense that limited the Bluejays to a season-low 249 yards.
Bednarz, a freshman defensive back/punt returner from Wheaton, Ill., and Wheaton-Warrenville South High School (Exercise Science major), returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown during North Central’s win over Millikin. It was the second-longest punt return in North Central history and was his second punt return for a touchdown this season.
