Bowers, Kalble, Checchin named CCIW Football Players of the Week on October 5

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Wheaton’s Andrew Bowers, Augustana’s Frank Kalble and Illinois Wesleyan’s Artie Checchin were named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Football Players of the Week on Monday.
 
Bowers, a junior quarterback from Nashville, Tennessee and Ensworth High School (Business/Economics major), stepped in for injured starter Johnny Peltz and amassed 426 yards of total offense during a 31-7 win at North Park in the CCIW opener on Saturday. He finished 21-of-30 for 372 yards and two touchdown passes and rushed for 54 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown. His 23-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter gave Wheaton a 7-0 lead and his 17-yard scoring pass in the second quarter helped the Thunder hold a 17-0 halftime lead. He finished the scoring on the day with a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
 
Kalble, a senior defensive back from Arlington Heights, Illinois and Hersey High School (Finance & Economics major), totaled 11 tackles (eight solo) and two pass breakups during the Vikings’ 9-3 win over Elmhurst in the CCIW opener on Saturday. Kalble, who missed Augustana’s last two games due to an injury, helped limit the Bluejays to just 221 yards of total offense including 49 rushing and 172 passing.
 
Checchin, a senior wide receiver from Arlington Heights, Illinois and Rolling Meadows High School (Business/Finance major), recovered an onside kick that led to the game-winning touchdown during the Titans’ 21-17 come-from-behind win over Carthage on Saturday. Checchin made two touchdown catches along with the onside kick in the final 1:19 and finished with 10 catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns on the day. His 18-yard TD catch came with 1:19 left and cut the Red Men lead to 17-15. Following his onside kick recovery, he added a 10-yard TD catch with 10.7 seconds left for the win.
