NAPERVILLE, Ill. – North Central’s Sam Carius and Wheaton’s John Schmitz were named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Baseball Players of the Week on Tuesday.

Carius, a senior outfielder from Naperville, Illinois and Waubonsie Valley High School (Sociology-Criminal Justice major), hit .500 (10-for-20) with two runs, two doubles and a .600 slugging percentage for the Cardinals last week. He led North Central in hits and total bases and finished with multiple hits in each game of a three-game sweep of North Park this weekend. He finished 2-for-5 in a 7-6 win in game one and 3-for-5 with two runs in a 3-2 win in game two on April 27. Carius ended the series by going 2-for-5 in a 6-3 win on April 27. Earlier in the week, Carius went 3-for-5 against the University of Chicago on April 22.

Schmitz, a sophomore pitcher from West Chicago, Illinois and Wheaton Academy (English major), was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two relief appearances last week. He made two relief appearances in Wheaton’s first-ever sweep of Augustana. He worked 6 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, scattering three hits with five strikeouts in a 4-2 win in game one of a double header on April 27. In Friday’s opener, he pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and held the Vikings scoreless on one hit with two strikeouts.
