Illinois Wesleyan captures 2008 cciw men's golf championship

WHEATON, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan shot a fourth-round total of 307, finishing with a four-day total of 1209 (294-296-312-307) en route to winning the 2008 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men's Golf Championship Saturday at Cantigny Golf in Wheaton, Illinois.

With the win, Illinois Wesleyan earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Golf Championship, held May 13-16 at the Chateau Elan Resort in Braselton, Georgia.

Defending champion Carthage placed second (304-287-319-316-1226), followed by Wheaton (305-305-317-317-1244), Millikin (303-298-332-321-1254), North Central (326-308-331-324-1289), Elmhurst (319-326-334-322-1301), North Park (312-318-336-337-1303) and Augustana (324-317-356-334-1331).

Illinois Wesleyan's Chris Green (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) (72-74-73-75-294) and Carthage's Tyler Wollberg (Mundelein, Ill.) (74-69-75-76-294) finished in a tie for first, but Green took home medalist honors by winning a four-hole sudden-death playoff.

Bennett Blakeman (Burr Ridge, Ill./Lyons Township) from Illinois Wesleyan was third (73-74-75-74-296) while Wheaton's Chase Yacko (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Northview) (74-75-77-74-300) was fourth. Carthage's Matt Carr (Galesburg, Ill.) (74-70-81-78-303) was fifth, followed by Illinois Wesleyan's Matt Wennmaker (Oregon, Ill./H.S.) (75-72-80-77-304), Wheaton's Chip Wedgeworth (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Christian Academy) (79-78-75-77-309), Millikin's Cory Henry (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown) (74-74-82-80-310), Wheaton's Kyler Ferguson (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) (71-74-81-84-310) and North Park' s Blake Blumenstock (Palatka, Fla./H.S.) (74-77-79-82-312).

Wollberg was invited to participate as an individual at the upcoming NCAA Championship.
