Pokorny, Wenger, O’Donnell named CCIW Football Players of the Week

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Alex Pokorny of Wheaton, Matt Wenger of North Central and Danny O’Donnell of Carthage were named College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Football Players of the Week Monday.

Pokorny, a senior wide receiver from Geneva, Ill., and Geneva High School, caught three passes - all for touchdowns, for 140 yards during Wheaton’s 48-3 win over Concordia (Wis.) on Saturday. He caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Sean Norris early in the second quarter to give Wheaton a 17-0 lead, and he extended the Thunder advantage to 24-0 when with a 35-yard touchdown catch. The senior’s final score of the day was a 45-yard catch in the end zone in the third quarter.

Wenger, a junior linebacker from Davis, Ill., and Dakota High School, recorded a game-high 13 tackles during North Central’s 49-9 win over Benedictine on Saturday. He also recorded a sack and an interception in leading the Cardinal defense, which has not allowed an offensive touchdown so far this season.

O’Donnell, a senior cornerback from Elk Grove Village, Ill., and Elk Grove High School, returned two kickoffs for 114 yards, including a 95-yard return for a touchdown during Carthage’s 27-21 win over Lakeland on Saturday. He also returned three punts for 15 yards. On defense, O’Donnell had four tackles, two interceptions and two pass break-ups.
