NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Elmhurst’s Matt D’Angelo, along with Wheaton’s Shane Woodward and Tim Ellingsen, were named College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Football Players of the Week Monday.
D’Angelo, a senior wide receiver from McHenry, Ill., and McHenry East High School, helped Elmhurst erase a 19-point second half deficit and earn a 29-26 win at Carthage on Saturday. D’Angelo hauled in eight passes for 139 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Bluejays’ win. Seven of D’Angelo’s eight receptions came after the Bluejays were down by 19 in the third quarter. D’Angelo had five catches, and scored both touchdowns (14 and seven yards) in Elmhurst’s final two scoring drives of the fourth quarter. On the season, D’Angelo now has 35 receptions for 598 yards and eight touchdowns.
Woodward, a senior safety from Oceanside, Calif., and Vista High School, helped lead Wheaton to a 26-14 win at Augustana on Saturday, tallying a team-high six total tackles, all solo stops. He intercepted an Augustana pass with 3:32 left in the game and Augustana trailing 26-14. The team captain’s interception forced an abrupt conclusion to the Vikings’ final offensive drive of the game, allowing the Thunder offense to run the ball and take time off the clock for the closing minutes. Woodward and the Thunder defense held Augustana to just 45 yards of total offense in the second half as the Thunder rallied from a 14-13 halftime deficit.
Ellingsen, a senior placekicker from Houston, Texas, and Clear Lake High School, booted a career-best four field goals during Wheaton’s win at Augustana. Ellingsen kicked a 47-yarder, a 40-yarder and had two field goals of 21 yards. Ellingsen’s 47-yard kick in the first quarter of the game cut Augustana’s lead to 7-3 and was the longest field goal by a Wheaton kicker since Andrew Day booted a 48-yarder against North Central on October 2, 2004. His first 21-yard kick of the game came with no time left in the first half to cut the Vikings’ lead to 14-13 at halftime.
