NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Wheaton became the first College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) football team since 2004 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship on Saturday, defeating Wabash on the road 59-28.

North Central however, lost its second round matchup at home against Franklin (Ind.) 38-28, meaning Wheaton will travel to Franklin, Indiana next Saturday, December 6 to face the Grizzlies at 11 a.m. CST. The winner advances to the semifinals to face the winner of the Cortland State vs. Mt. Union game.

The trip will mark the first time since the 2004 season that a member of the CCIW advanced to the quarterfinals. Carthage was the last team to do so, losing to Mt. Union 38-20.

The last CCIW team to advance to the semifinals was Augustana in 1988.

With both North Central and Wheaton playing this weekend, it marked the third time in conference history that the CCIW had two of its members advance to the second round in the same season. The other two times came in 2004 (Carthage & Wheaton) and 2006 (North Central & Wheaton).
