North Park's Ahlberg wins 2013 CCIW Man of the Year honor

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – North Park’s Tim Ahlberg was named the 2013 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Man of the Year on Tuesday.

Ahlberg, a goalkeeper on the Vikings’ soccer team, was chosen through a voting process conducted by the CCIW Senior Woman Administrators and Faculty Athletics Representatives. He was chosen among a group of six other nominees including Illinois Wesleyan’s Danny Kenny (soccer), North Central’s Dan Kerley (cross country/track & field), Carthage’s Jeff Lotz (tennis), Augustana’s Greg Patton (track & field), Wheaton’s Parker Thompson (cross country/track & field) and Elmhurst’s Scottie Williams (football).

The CCIW Man of the Year award honors senior male student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.

A senior from Perrysburg, Ohio and Perrysburg High School, Ahlberg earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.91 as a Business & Economics major with a concentration in Accounting. He won North Park’s Distinguished Senior Award, was a Fulbright Bi-national Business Exchange Grant recipient, and a member of the Dean’s List every semester. Ahlberg also studied abroad during his second semester of his sophomore year at the University of Guanajuato, Mexico and is participating in North Park’s Global Partnerships mission trip to Thailand in the summer of 2013.

He volunteered with Special Olympics, was a men’s small group bible study leader, took part in Friday night homeless ministries and participated in a discipleship with North Park’s campus pastor.

Ahlberg also held leadership positions as a team captain on the men’s soccer squad, was president of the North Park Student Government and a member of North Park’s Business Club.

A three-year starter and four-year letter winner, Ahlberg was a first team all-conference recipient in 2010 and 2012 and a second team recipient in 2011. He was an all-region second team selection in 2012 and helped lead the Vikings to three-straight NCAA postseason appearances including advancing to the second round in 2012.

The CCIW Man of the Year award was established in 2008 to recognize the conference’s top male student-athlete, similar to the NCAA’s recognition of its top female student-athlete, which the CCIW participates in by submitting one female nominee at the end of each academic year.
