WHEATON, Ill. - The sixth-ranked Wheaton football team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship on Saturday with a 63-31 victory over Aurora University. Wheaton improves to 10-1 on the season while Aurora finishes its season 8-3.
After a back-and-forth opening quarter that saw Wheaton lead 14-13, the Thunder took control of the game with four second quarter touchdowns to take a 42-13 halftime lead. Wheaton's run would reach 49 unanswered points en route to a 63-13 lead, before the Spartans closed the game with a trio of late touchdowns.
Luke Anthony tied a Thunder single-game record with six touchdown passes while throwing for 233 yards and running for 74 yards and a touchdown. Spencer Peterson was on the receiving end of three of Anthony's six scoring passes with Giovanni Weeks, Matthew Tucker, and Gionvanni Weeks each catching one touchdown pass.
Weeks led a Thunder rushing attack that rolled up 427 yards on the ground by gaining 174 yards on 18 carries with one touchdown. Sam Singleton ran for 84 yards on 11 carries and Jeremiah Tucker gained 77 yards on five carries and a touchdown.
Wheaton advances to face Central College (Iowa) on Saturday, November 27. The Second Round game between the Thunder and Dutch (11-0) will kickoff in Pella, Iowa at noon. You can follow the game via Central's
