CCIW Women in Athletics Series #1: Liesl Fowler - Augustana College

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin's (CCIW) 75th anniversary celebration continues as we recognize the careers of past women's student-athletes, coaches and administrators with a weekly video series titled CCIW Women in Athletics.

Each week over the next nine weeks, CCIW Assistant Executive Director Mike Krizman will interview one former student-athlete or coach/administrator from each conference institution.

Today, on National Girls & Women in Sports Day, the series begins with Augustana's Liesl Fowler. A former women's volleyball and track & field student-athlete, Fowler competed in the CCIW's first-ever women's athletics contest: a volleyball match between Elmhurst and Augustana in 1986. What followed was a distinguished career in athletics and then a successful career as a campus administrator.

She served as the Vikings' women's volleyball head coach from 1992 to 2002, winning conference titles in 1996 and 2001, as well as being named the 2001 CCIW Coach of the Year. She accumulated the program’s best collegiate coaching record at 222-138 for a winning percentage of .621.

Fowler also served Augustana’s Director of Women’s Athletics and the Physical Education Department Chair for six years, before starting her current role as the college registrar in August of 2004. Three years later, “Assistant Dean” was added to her title.
