Matthew Helwig was selected as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men's Basketball Players of the Week on Monday.
A Sport Management major from Aurora, Illinois, Helwig helped lead the Cardinals to a 1-1 showing over the break. Helwig posted his second 40-point game of the season in the Cardinals' victory at Olivet College on December 22 and posted 22 points and seven rebounds in an overtime loss to Hope College on December 28. In the Cardinals' win at Olivet, Helwig connected on eight three-pointers as part of a 14-22 shooting night from the field. He was also perfect on all five free throw attempts and grabbed eight rebounds. He was also perfect on 10 free throw attempts against Hope while making two three-pointers. On the season, Helwig ranks fourth in Division III with an average of 28.5 points per game.
