MOLINE, Ill. -- The top three seeds prevailed -- all via the 10-run rule -- during the first day of the 2023 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Baseball Tournament at Brunner Field in Moline, Ill.
#1 Augustana 11, #6 Carroll 1 (8 innings) | Box score
Top seed Augustana jumped on Carroll early with three runs in the first inning and doubled the advantage by the third inning en route to an 11-1 win in Wednesday’s tournament opener. The decision marked Augustana’s 17th straight win since April 12 and improved the Vikings to 15-1 at Brunner Field this spring.
The first three hitters in the Augie lineup combined to go 8-for-11 with eight RBI, led by a 3-for-4 performance with four RBI from first baseman Matt Ozanic. The senior from Franklin Park, Ill. hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning and delivered run-scoring singles in the fifth and eighth innings.
Augustana third baseman Alex Simon drilled a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to help the hosts set the tone for the afternoon.
CU third baseman Benton Holly hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, part of his 2-for-3 effort.
All-CCIW First-Team selection Josh Wintroub struck out 11 over 6.1 innings for the Vikings. He scattered four hits and allowed a single run.
#2 North Central 15, #5 Illinois Wesleyan 5 (7 innings) | Box score
North Central took care of business in its afternoon bout with Illinois Wesleyan, scoring three times in the third inning to overcome an early deficit and breaking the contest open with 11 runs over the fifth and sixth innings.
Five Cardinals had multi-hit games and NCC catcher Michael Davis shared game-high honors with three hits and four RBI. His bases-loaded double in the fifth inning gave the Cardinals breathing room in the form of an 8-3 advantage. NCC led by at least four runs the rest of the way.
NCC’s Jason Shanner pitched into the seventh inning to produce his fourth win of the season.
Louis Perona went 3-for-3 with two doubles for the Titans. Thomas Bleker hit a two-run single for IWU in the fifth inning.
#3 Millikin 19, #4 North Park 4 (7 innings) | Box score
Millikin churned out the highest run total in a CCIW Tournament game since 1998 and the largest margin of victory in a CCIW postseason game since 1993 in Wednesday’s 19-4 win.
MU batted around twice in the bottom of the first inning, sending 19 batters to the plate to build a 14-0 lead. The Big Blue collected 11 of their 21 hits in the first inning.
Liam McGill, Andy Niebrugge, Tommy Shaw and Ryan Janssen had three hits apiece in the win. Sixteen of Millikin’s 21 hits were singles. Niebrugge and Cayden Silvester homered.
