CCIW Announces Men’s Basketball All-Conference Teams

NAPERVILLE – The All-College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men’s Basketball Teams were announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.

2023-24 All-CCIW Men's Basketball Teams

The Fred Young Most Outstanding Student-Athlete was Jonathan Zapinski of Elmhurst, the Bluejays’ first winner since Ryan Knuppel in 2001. Carthage freshman Ryan Johnson collected the league’s First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year honor, and Illinois Wesleyan’s Ron Rose was recognized as the CCIW Coach of the Year for the fifth time.

Zapinski, a 6-foot-6 forward/center from Southlake, Texas, finished the 16-game CCIW slate with averages of 11.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.9 blocked shots per game. He was the conference leader in blocks as well as assist-to-turnover ratio (3.1), compiling 49 assists against just 16 turnovers in nearly 31 minutes per game.

Johnson is the second consecutive Firebird to win the league’s First-Year honor after teammate Julian Campbell was the recipient in 2023. The Oswego, Ill. native was the only freshman to earn All-CCIW honors on Monday after finishing his debut season with 12.8 points and 7.4 boards per game across the league schedule. Additionally, he shot 55.8 percent from the floor, third-highest in the league.

Rose piloted Illinois Wesleyan to its second outright CCIW regular-season championship in the last three seasons, sailing to a 14-2 league record. IWU was 18-7 overall and cracked the D3hoops.com national rankings on Monday at #22.

The 18th-year head coach and 1988 IWU grad previously won or shared CCIW Coach of the Year accolades in 2013, 2014, 2018 and 2022.

There were four unanimous All-CCIW First Team selections: Zapinski, EU teammate John Ittounas, Carthage’s Filip Bulatovic, and Illinois Wesleyan’s Nick Roper. Bulatovic is on the league’s postseason honor roll for the fourth time, the only four-time honoree recognized on Monday.

Bulatovic, Zapinski and North Park’s Kolden Vanlandingham also repeated as All-CCIW First Team choices on Monday.

In all, there were six repeat All-CCIW honorees from last season in Monday’s announcement and a seventh – IWU’s Luke Yoder – was named to the First Team after a Second Team pick in 2022.
