CCIW Men's Volleyball Student-Athletes of the Week (Jan. 20)

NAPERVILLE – The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) announced its Men’s Volleyball Student-Athletes of the Week for matches played between Monday, Jan. 6 and Sunday, Jan. 19.
 
Hitter: Gerald Malana, North Park, Sophomore (Dededo, Guam)
Malana averaged 5.25 points per set and 4.00 kills per set in the Vikings’ season-opening matches versus Concordia Chicago and Westminster (Mo.) in River Forest, Ill.
 
The 5-foot-8 outside hitter had 15 kills and 12 digs in the opener at CUC, a four-set NPU victory. He also chipped in three service aces and three total blocks in the victory. Malana followed that effort with 17 kills, 10 digs, four more service aces and two total blocks against Westminster.
 
Setter: Carson Steinbach, North Central, Junior (Media, Penn.)
Steinbach notched a triple-double – 41 assists, 11 digs and 10 kills – to power the 18th-ranked Cardinals to a five-set win at Concordia Wisconsin to begin the season on Saturday. He also delivered three service aces in the victory. 
 
He also contributed 42 assists, five kills and three total blocks in the Cardinals’ five-set defeat versus #2 NYU on Sunday in Naperville.
 
Defensive: Noah Chanthalangsy, North Park, Graduate Student (Rockford, Ill.)
Chanthalangsy closed the Vikings’ opening weekend as the Division III leader with 5.0 digs per set. 
 
His 25 digs in Friday’s opener against Concordia Wisconsin were a new North Park record. He followed that performance with 15 digs against Westminster.
