NAPERVILLE — Wheaton’s Craig Rusin and North Central’s Joris Rijnja have been named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men’s Soccer Student-Athletes of the Week, as announced Tuesday. Rusin earned Offensive honors after leading the Thunder to a 2-1 win at Carroll that secured the regular-season conference title, while Rijnja claimed Defensive recognition for his pivotal play on both ends in North Central’s unbeaten week.
Offensive: Craig Rusin, Wheaton
In Wheaton’s 2-1 win at Carroll last Wednesday that clinched the team’s regular-season CCIW title, Rusin tallied three total points. He assisted the opening goal that sparked Wheaton’s attack, then scored the game-winner with a clinical finish from the top of the box. The performance marked his second straight multi-point match.
Defensive: Joris Rijnja, North Central
Rijnja scored the game-winning goal at North Park on a penalty kick last Saturday in the Cardinals’ 2-1 win. He also anchored the defense allowing just five shots on goal against Illinois Wesleyan in last Wednesday’s 1-1 draw.
