NAPERVILLE – The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) announced its Baseball Student-Athletes of the Week for games played between Monday, March 17 and Sunday, March 23.
Hitter: Rock Smith, Elmhurst, Junior (Elmhurst, Ill.)
Smith hit safely in all four of his starts during the first half of the Bluejays’ trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. He went 5-for-11, slugging .818 and reaching base 11 times overall at a .647 clip.
Included in Smith’s week was a two-hit, four-RBI performance versus MCLA last Thursday. The following day, he scored three runs and reached base five times – a double, triple, two walks and was hit by a pitch – in the Bluejays’ 7-5 triumph over Framingham State in Auburndale. He also had a pair of hits in a doubleheader with NYU on Saturday.
Pitcher: Zach DeMarlie, Augustana, Junior (Milan, Ill.)
DeMarlie earned his second win of the season on Friday versus St. Olaf, pitching 8.0 scoreless innings in the Vikings’ 10-0 win in Winter Haven, Fla.
The right-hander allowed only two hits in the complete-game shutout, striking out two on 85 pitches to lower his season earned-run average to 2.74 in 23.0 innings. The decision marked DeMarlie’s fifth career win.
