YORK, Pa. -- The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team concluded its 2025 season in the NCAA Tournament Second Round, as the Titans fell to No. 13 SUNY Cortland 23-8 Saturday night, May 10. With the loss, Illinois Wesleyan finishes the season with a 14-3 record, while the Red Dragons improve to 18-2.
Fifth-years Gage Black and Bob Boone tied for the team-lead in scoring with two goals apiece in their final game donning the Green and White. Sophomore Timothy McHugh also finished with two points, as both came on assists.
At the X, senior Nick Schroeder posted a 14-for-23 showing, and finished with five ground balls, the second-most for the Titans. Fellow senior Nick Horrocks scooped up six ground balls to lead the Green and White, followed by junior Kade Miers, as he finished with four.
Miers and junior Billy McHugh led the defense with two caused turnovers apiece, while Horrocks and senior Sam Skelton each added one.
The Titans saw another standout performance from senior goalkeeper Colin Tervo. After breaking the program's single-game saves record with 23 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Championship a week ago, Tervo matched that effort with 23 saves in his final collegiate game. The senior finishes his career as only the second goalkeeper to eclipse the 500 career saves mark with 549, joining the all-time saves leader, Steven Laduzinsky (619).
Cortland got out ahead early taking a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Green and White gained possession off a faceoff violation and capitalized on the possession. Freshman Carlo Adams dished the ball to B. McHugh, and the long stick midfielder put the Titans on the board in the second period with a long-range goal.
Tervo came up with a save on the following Cortland possession, and Black buried a goal to cut the deficit to 6-2 with 12:16 left to play in the second quarter.
After another Tervo save and a Red Dragons turnover, Black stayed hot, as he ripped one into the top corner to trim the Cortland lead to 6-3.
The two teams traded turnovers, and the Titan defense made another big stop to keep the momentum. Sandwiching the Cortland attacker a few feet from the net, the ball dribbled to Tervo to force the turnover.
The Red Dragons rattled off three straight goals to take a 9-3 lead over the Titans into halftime.
Illinois Wesleyan could not find a groove to begin the second half, as Cortland scored the first five to go ahead 14-3 with 7:43 left to play in the third period.
Following a save from Tervo and a turnover, IWU finally ended its scoring drought, as T. McHugh fed fifth-year Ike Eastburn for a goal at the 4:37 mark in the third.
Cortland answered with a goal shortly after, but Boone shook off his defender for a wide-open look, making it 15-5 with just under two minutes on the clock.
The Red Dragons added another goal to close out the third period with the Titans trailing 16-5 heading into the final 15 minutes of action.
After winning the faceoff to begin the fourth quarter, Cortland extended its lead to 17-5. Following a faceoff violation, IWU responded with a goal from Horrocks, making it 17-6 with 14:30 left to play.
Recovering from a Cortland man-up goal, Boone found the back of the net for his second goal of the game, making it 18-7, and drew a slashing penalty to get the Green and White a man-up opportunity to follow.
Schroeder won the ensuing faceoff, and Illinois Wesleyan quickly capitalized on the penalty, as T. McHugh sent it over to senior Sam Weinberg for a goal to cut the deficit to 18-8 with 8:04 remaining.
The Titans could never get any closer, as Cortland closed the contest on a run, ultimately taking the win 23-8.
