CCIW Teams Split Outcomes in NCAA Men’s Volleyball Second Round

KENOSHA, Wis. --- Two College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) teams were in action Friday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Volleyball Tournament at Tarble Arena. No. 3 Carthage advanced to the national quarterfinals with a straight-set win over Dominican (Ill.), while No. 11 Loras saw its season end with a four-set loss to No. 6 Southern Virginia.
 
Carthage improved to 23-3 with a 3-0 victory over Dominican by set scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-21. The Firebirds used scoring runs in each set to maintain control of the match and finished with a .361 hitting percentage, compared to .148 for the Stars.
 
Ben Heise led Carthage with 11 kills. Ryan Bartz and Hudson Sweitzer added nine kills each, while Ryan Morey recorded 35 assists. Devon O’Callaghan finished with a team-high 11 digs.
 
Loras closed its season at 20-7 following a 3-1 loss to Southern Virginia. The Duhawks dropped the opening two sets, 25-23 and 26-24, before taking the third set, 25-19. Southern Virginia then secured the match with a 25-21 win in the fourth. Play was suspended for nearly an hour during the third set because of a tornado warning before competition resumed.
 
In the loss, Evan Dziadkowiec recorded 46 assists and became the first player in program history to reach 1,000 assists in a season. Connor Jaral led the Loras attack with 18 kills, while Nolan Krygsheld and Roman Rothermel added 11 and 10, respectively.
 
Carthage advances to face Southern Virginia in the NCAA quarterfinals on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Tarble Arena.
