NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The start of College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin league action this past week brought a slate of down-to-the-wire matches and some heroic performances from North Park University’s Gustav Finér and Millikin University’s Joshua Garrett. The freshman forward and junior goalkeeper were vital in their squads’ successes and each earned CCIW Men’s Soccer Student-Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday.

Offensive

Gustav Finér, North Park (Forward, Freshman, Uppsala, Sweden)

After being held without a goal in his first five matches of the season, Finér has been on a roll as of late, scoring five goals in his past four outings. This past week saw North Park notch a 2-1 win over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in non-conference play before starting CCIW competition with a 3-2 victory over Wheaton College. Finér had both goals for the Vikings against UW-Whitewater, starting the scoring in the eighth minute before breaking the deadlock and netting the game-winner in the 69th minute. He followed that up on Saturday with the tying goal in the 64th minute to make it 2-2 with the Thunder before NPU found the go-ahead goal in the 86th minute.

Defensive

Joshua Garrett, Millikin (Goalkeeper, Junior, Decatur, Ill.)

In 180 minutes in between the sticks, Joshua Garrett didn’t allow a goal this week as his Big Blue ran roughshod over Franklin College, 6-0, on Wednesday before following that up with a 2-0 statement road win at Carthage College. Garrett preserved the shutouts for Millikin by making two saves against Franklin and then six more to keep the Firebirds off the scoreboard.
