Makuh, Carlton Jr., and Ryniec Claim First CCIW Football Weekly Awards of the Season

Week 1 Standouts Earn CCIW Football Student-Athlete of the Week Recognition.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Augustana College quarterback Jimmy Makuh and North Central College standouts Phillip Carlton Jr. and Sean Ryniec claimed the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin’s first Football Student-Athlete of the Week honors, announced Monday.

Makuh accounted for five touchdowns and 310 yards of total offense in Augustana’s 42-14 win over Simpson College. Carlton Jr. anchored the North Central defense with 12 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack as the No. 1 Cardinals defeated No. 2 Bethel University, 44-21. Ryniec delivered a strong performance in the kicking game, going 3-for-3 on field goals, including a 56-yarder that ranks as the second-longest in program history, while also converting all five extra-point attempts.

Offensive

Jimmy Makuh, Augustana (Quarterback, Senior, Mount Prospect, Ill.)

Makuh had a strong debut for the Vikings, finding success through the air and on the ground while accounting for five touchdowns in Augustana’s 42-14 statement win over Simpson College. The senior quarterback rushed for 69 yards and two touchdowns while also completing 16 of 23 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns.

Defensive

Phillip Carlton Jr., North Central (Linebacker, Senior, Plainfield, Ill.)

Carlton Jr. played a pivotal role in shutting down No. 2-ranked Bethel University in the No. 1 Cardinals’ season opener, helping North Central earn a 44-21 win. He totaled 12 tackles, including seven solo stops and five assisted tackles. He also recorded 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack.

Special Teams

Sean Ryniec, North Central (Kicker, Senior, Downers Grove, Ill.)

Ryniec had a strong outing in North Central’s season opener. He drilled a 56-yard field goal, the second-longest in program history. Ryniec was also perfect on field goal attempts, going 3-for-3 with makes from 31 and 27 yards in addition to his 56-yarder, while also going 5-for-5 on extra points.
