2011 CCIW Swimming Championships: Day One Recap

WHEATON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan women and Wheaton men lead the team standings after the first day of the 2011 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Swimming Championships.

The Titans lead the women standings with a team score of 271, followed by Wheaton (247), Carthage (242), Augustana (148), North Central (92), Millikin (74) and Rose-Hulman (71).

The Thunder men lead with a team score of 279, followed by Carthage (269), Rose-Hulman (203), Illinois Wesleyan (148), Augustana (98), Millikin (54) and North Central (40).

Carthage’s 200 freestyle relay team of Natalia Bialecka, Kayla Orendorff, Michelle Pelka and Amanda Croix won the first event of the evening (1:35.86), followed in second by Wheaton’s Moire Yue, Heather Crockett, Kelsey Craggett and Ali Offerdahl (1:36.42).

Carthage’s Ryan Ortmann, Bob Pellican, Dan Jones and Blake Bendix won the men’s 200 freestyle relay (1:23.90), while Wheaton’s AJ Provonsha, Matt Gallagher, Tim Walker and Dan Nahigian placed second (1:24.09).

Carlie Herich picked up Wheaton’s first individual title of the night in the 500 freestyle, winning with a time of 5:03.10. Illinois Wesleyan’s Angela Lugg placed second (5:03.31).

Augustana’s Justin Reppy won the men’s 500 freestyle with a time of 4:40.40, followed by Carthage’s Kyle Drake (4:44.34).

Pelka broke her previous meet record to win the women’s 200 IM (2:07.34). Illinois Wesleyan’s Katie McHugh finished second (2:08.65).

Marcus Duval won Illinois Wesleyan’s first men’s individual title in the 200 IM, placing first with a time of 1:54.93. Rose-Hulman’s Matt Ross (1:57.45) finished second.

Croix was champion in the women’s 50 freestyle (23:08), followed by Yue (23:69).

Ortmann was champion for Carthage in the men’s 50 freestyle with a time of 21:08. Provonsha finished second for Wheaton (21:43).

In the final event of the evening, Carthage’s Jensena Paul, Amy Mueller, Pelka and Croix won the 400 medley relay with a meet-record time of 3:51.56. Illinois Wesleyan’s Andrea Peterson, Lizzie Egan, McHugh and Lugg finished second (3:51.57).

On the men’s side, Wheaton’s Wills Francis, Preston Conger, Gallagher and Provonsha won the 400 medley relay (3:25.52), followed by Rose-Hulman’s John Huster, Andrew Podgorski, Ross and Alex Krull in second (3:29.03).

Day two of the 2011 CCIW Swimming Championships begins Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. with the prelims of the Women’s 400 IM. The finals begin at 6 p.m. with the women’s 200 medley relay.
