2011 CCIW Swimming Championships: Day Two Recap

WHEATON, Ill. – The Wheaton women and Carthage men currently hold the lead after the second day of the 2011 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Swimming Championships.

In the women’s standings, the Thunder lead with a score of 582.5, followed by Illinois Wesleyan (563), Carthage (553), Augustana (231.5), North Central (214), Millikin (149) and Rose-Hulman (101).

On the men’s side, the Red Men lead with a score of 615, followed by Wheaton (601), Rose-Hulman (426), Illinois Wesleyan (305), Augustana (185), Millikin (112) and North Central (97).

In the first event of the evening, Illinois Wesleyan’s Andrea Peterson, Lizzie Egan, Gracie Nafziger and Melissa Graffy won the women’s 200 medley relay with a time of 1:46.97. Wheaton’s Emma Rogers, Caroline Hannema, Moire Yue and Kelsey Craggett finished second (1:48.57).

On the men’s side, Wheaton’s Wills Francis, Preston Conger, Matt Gallagher and Tim Walker won the 200 medley relay with a meet-record time of 1:32.50. Carthage’s Jake Carabelli, Mike Moravek, Doug Schranck and Ryan Ortmann placed second (1:35.32).

Michelle Pelka captured Carthage’s first individual title of the night in the women’s 400 IM. She beat her previous meet-record time of 4:27.79, winning with a time of 4:27.49. Wheaton’s Jamie Walitsch was the second place finisher at 4:33.81.

Illinois Wesleyan’s Marcus Duval won the men’s 400 IM (4:06.10) while Carthage’s Kyle Drake finished second (4:07.86).

Illinois Wesleyan’s Katie McHugh broke her own meet record in the women’s 100 butterfly, winning with a time of 56.87.Nafziger placed second with a time of 58.01.

Rose-Hulman’s John Huster won the men’s 100 butterfly with a time of 50.21. Gallagher placed second for Wheaton (50.86).

Carthage’s Amanda Croix won her fourth-straight title in the women’s 200 freestyle (1:49.73), followed by Illinois Wesleyan’s Angela Lugg in second (1:53.30).

Justin Reppy won his second individual title of the championship for Augustana, winning the men’s 200 freestyle (1:44.15). Wheaton’s AJ Provonsha finished second (1:44.47).

North Central’s Katie Stratton won the women’s 100 breaststroke (1:06.26), followed by Illinois Wesleyan’s Katie Bell (1:08.30).

Andrew Podgorski won Rose-Hulman’s second individual title of the evening, winning the men’s 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.10. Conger finished second for Wheaton (58.40).

Illinois Wesleyan’s Peterson was champion in the women’s 100 backstroke (55.74-meet record), followed by Wheaton’s Yue (57.83).

Illinois Wesleyan’s Mikey Firth captured the men’s 100 backstroke title with a time of 51.23. Carthage’s Chris Varner came in second (52.13).

In the final events of the night, Carthage’s Ember McCoy, Kayla Orendorff, Pelka and Croix won the women’s 800 freestyle relay (7:37.54-meet record), while Illinois Wesleyan’s Egan, Peterson, McHugh and Lugg placed second (7:43.29).

In the men’s 800 freestyle relay, Carthage’s Drake, Varner, Isaac Rothenbaum and Jake Carabelli finished first with a time of 6:56.28. Illinois Wesleyan’s Brett Caras, Duval, Tommy Gilbert and Firth placed second (7:04.04).

The 2011 CCIW Swimming Championships conclude tomorrow with the final day of events beginning at 10:30 a.m. with the prelims of the women’s 200 backstroke. The seniors will be recognized in a ceremony at 5:30 p.m. before the 6 p.m. start of the finals. Saturday’s finals session begin with the women’s 1650 freestyle.
