Mangia, Vorel named CCIW Softball Players of the Week

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – North Central’s Vlasta Mangia and Illinois Wesleyan’s Alyssa Vorel were named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Softball Players of the Week Tuesday.

Mangia, a freshman outfielder/pitcher from Cicero, Ill., and Morton High School, finished the week hitting .846 at the plate, helping the Cardinals to a 4-2 start to their spring trip in Arizona. Mangia opened the season with a 3-for-4 effort against Husson on March 18, driving in three runs, before closing out the day going 3-for-3 against Lakeland with three RBI and two runs scored. She finished the week 11-for-13 at the plate with eight RBI and two extra base hits, recording a slugging percentage of 1.154 and an on-base percentage of .875. In the circle, Mangia made three starts, compiling a 2-1 record and a 4.45 ERA while striking out 10. She is an Accounting major.

Vorel, a sophomore pitcher from Homer Glen, Ill., and Lockport Township High School, was 2-0 with a 0.88 ERA and pitched a five-inning no-hitter during a 9-0 win over Kean on March 18. Vorel struck out seven and walked two in her no-hitter. For the week, she struck out 18 and walked only four in 16 total innings and also had a save among her six appearances. Vorel is a Biology major.
