NAPERVILLE, Ill. – North Central’s Vlasta Mangia and Carthage’s Krystina Leazer were named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Softball Players of the Week Tuesday.
Mangia, a freshman from Cicero, Ill., and Morton High School (Accounting major), finished the week hitting .500 (nine-for-18), helping the Cardinals finish the week 5-2 and qualify for the CCIW Tournament. Four of the freshman's nine hits went for extra bases, tallying one double, one triple and two home runs including a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth against Augustana in a 4-3 victory. Mangia drove in five runs and stole one base and had an on-base percentage of .571.
Leazer, a sophomore from Des Plaines, Ill., and Elk Grove High School (Exercise & Sport Science major), started four-straight CCIW games and won three of them. Leazer started and completed both games in the Lady Reds’ 1-0 and 2-0 wins at North Central on April 29. She pitched a complete game in a 1-0 win in the first game at Elmhurst the next day. Leazer started the Elmhurst nightcap, but left in the fifth inning as the Bluejays went on to win by a 9-5 margin. For the weekend, Leazer was 3-1 with a 1.91 earned run average and 18 strikeouts in 25.6 innings pitched. For the year, she is 17-6 with a 1.80 earned run average and 177 strikeouts with just 18 walks in 152.0 innings pitched (thru May 1).
