NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Augustana and North Central each earned a share of the 2016 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) baseball title over the weekend.
The Vikings secured the title share in their regular season finale on Sunday, a 14-5 victory over Millikin. With the win, Augustana earned the right to host the CCIW Baseball Tournament as the Vikings hold the tiebreaker over the Cardinals with a 2-1 record during the regular season.
North Central clinched the title share on Saturday with a 6-3, 7-6 double header sweep of Carthage, which earned the Cardinals their second-straight regular season title.
This is Augustana’s sixth baseball title in program history and second under head coach Greg Wallace, who led the Vikings to an outright title in 2014.
North Central won its 12th title in program history and fifth under head coach Ed Mathey, who is in his second stint with the program after winning in 1994, 1996 and 1998. The Cardinals won the outright title last season in Mathey’s first year back after a 13-year absence.
The 2016 CCIW Baseball Tournament will begin on Thursday May 12 as No. 2 seed North Central faces No. 3 seed Illinois Wesleyan at 3:30 p.m., followed by No. 1 seed Augustana against No. 4 seed Carthage at 7 p.m. All games will be played at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field in Moline, Illinois.
