NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Carthage freshman Xingchen Liu swept the 2022-23 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Women’s Tennis Student-Athlete of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards and sixth-year North Central head coach Ryan Jump was voted CCIW Coach of the Year, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon. The CCIW also recognized 12 student-athletes as All-CCIW performers after the fall 2022 season.

2022-23 Women's Tennis All-CCIW Teams

Liu was one of three freshmen named to the All-CCIW First Team after sweeping her way to an 8-0 singles mark in league playing, including a 7-0 mark at the top spot in the lineup. The Hefei, China native won 12 singles matches overall in the fall and added five more CCIW wins in No. 1 doubles action. She is first Student-Athlete of the Year from Carthage since Haleigh McPeek in 2014 and the first player to also win the Newcomer of the Year award since North Central’s Kaeli Smashey in 2020.

Jump is the CCIW Coach of the Year for the third consecutive time after leading NCC to a perfect 13-0 overall record and sweeping the CCIW schedule (8-0) for the Cardinals’ third consecutive league crown.

Eight of the 12 individuals honored Wednesday were repeat All-CCIW choices from a year ago and five are three-time selections. North Central’s Kaeli Smashey, who was the CCIW Student-Athlete of the Year last season, is on the First Team for the third consecutive season after going 6-2 in CCIW singles action and joins Millikin’s Nikol Obradovic as repeat First Team honorees. Obradovic anchored the Big Blue’s lineup, going 6-2 from No. 1 singles.

Wheaton sophomore Audrey Vick, who made the Second Team a year ago as a freshman, is on the First Team this fall after a 7-1 singles campaign in league play. North Central’s Abby Penados (8-0 at No. 2 singles) and Wheaton’s Madeline Gentry (6-2 at No. 1 singles) join Liu as freshmen to receive First Team accolades.

The 2022-23 Second Team includes three seniors and three sophomores. Augustana senior Lilly Schoeck is a Second Team selection for the third consecutive campaign. Giana Apostoli from Carthage is also on the Second Team, a three-time recipient after First Team campaigns last season and as a freshman in 2019-20. Abygale Ahn of Wheaton was named to the Second Team on Wednesday and is another three-time winner after a First Team nod last year and a Second Team selection two seasons ago.

North Central sophomore Natalie Bassett has repeated on the Second Team, while Millikin sophomore Emily Markus received Second Team honors after earning the league’s Newcomer of the Year award last season. North Park sophomore Hanna Zethreus was also named to the Second Team, her first time earning All-CCIW accolades.
