The Cardinals, 47-time reigning champions at the event and currently ranked third in the most recent Division III U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, received eight first-place votes and a maximum of 64 points in the poll. NCC is also the top-ranked team in the Midwest Region, according to last week’s rankings released by the USTFCCCA.
Runners from NCC have produced nine of the 10 fastest 8K times in the CCIW this season, including a top time of 23:49.2 from Connor Riss at the Interregional Invitational on Oct. 15 in Rock Island, Ill. NCC’s Max Svienty appears on that list twice, having run the second-fastest time (23:53.1) in Rock Island on Oct. 15 and the 10th-fastest time (24:54.9) at the Division III Pre-Nationals in East Lansing, Mich. on Oct. 1.
Millikin was picked second in the coaches’ poll with one first-place vote and 57 total points. The Big Blue, ranked ninth in the Midwest Region last week, finished third at the CCIW Championship last season.
Carthage is the third CCIW team to currently appear in the USTFCCCA Regional Rankings at #10 in the North. The Firebirds garnered 49 points in the pre-championship CCIW poll to be voted third. CC is paced by Craig Hundley, whose time of 24:43.1 at the Interregional Invitational on Oct. 15 was the eighth-fastest effort in the league in 2022 and the only top-10 CCIW time by a runner not from North Central this fall.
Wheaton was fourth (42 points), followed by Augustana (39), Carroll (33), Illinois Wesleyan (21), Elmhurst (16) and North Park (8).
