NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) announced its Men’s Soccer All-Conference Teams, Friday morning. North Central junior forward Aiden Westerberg was voted CCIW Offensive Student-Athlete of the Year and NCC junior goalkeeper Sid Marquardt was selected Defensive Student-Athlete of the Year, two individuals that helped the Cardinals sweep the CCIW postseason men’s soccer specialty awards.
2022 Men's Soccer All-CCIW Teams
Matteo Innocenti, a freshman forward for the Cardinals, is the league’s Newcomer of the Year. Fourth-year head coach Enzo Fuschino was chosen by his peers as the CCIW Joe Bean Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season after leading NCC to an unbeaten regular season (14-0-4), a national ranking as high as #12 and its first CCIW regular-season championship since 1994.
The Cardinals landed eight players on the All-CCIW Teams, including a league-high five on the First Team. The duo of Westerberg and Marquardt are the first North Central players to earn Student-Athlete of the Year accolades in men’s soccer since Joe Strojaspal in 1994.
Westerberg, a native of Belvidere, Ill., was the CCIW leader in goals scored during conference competition with seven and ranked second among all players with 15 points. He produced multi-goal matches at Elmhurst on Sept. 24 and again in the regular-season finale versus Augustana on Oct. 26.
Marquardt played 695 minutes during the league schedule, posting a 1.03 goals-against average and recording a pair of shutouts. His overall career goals-against mark of 0.62 is ninth-lowest among active Division III goalkeepers. Innocenti emerged as an offensive force down the stretch and will ride a four-match point streak into the CCIW Tournament, including a three-goal performance at Millikin on Oct. 19.
North Park, which tied for second in the final league standings and entered the final week of the regular season ranked #14 by D3soccer.com, placed five players on the All-CCIW Teams, while fourth-place Carthage also secured five selections. Regular-season runner-up Wheaton and sixth-place Carroll also had two players earn All-CCIW honors.
Three players are repeat All-CCIW First Team choices – Carthage’s Mickey Reilly, North Central’s Sid Marquardt and North Park’s Angel Barriga. There are seven repeat selections overall and Barriga is the only three-time choice after also earning First Team selections in 2019 and 2021.
The six-team CCIW Tournament begins Saturday night with a pair of quarterfinal matches. Sixth-seeded Carroll will visit North Park for a 5 p.m. kickoff, while #5 Elmhurst travels to #4 Carthage at 6 p.m. Second-seeded Wheaton awaits the Carroll/North Park winner Wednesday and top-seeded North Central will host either Elmhurst or Carthage in Naperville.
