The CCIW Men’s Soccer Notebook: Regular Season Concludes

Only two conference matchdays remain as the CCIW Tournament looms.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - With only two days of matchups remaining in the conference season, intrigue abounds in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men’s soccer. While North Central College, North Park University, and Illinois Wesleyan University have all clinched spots in the CCIW Tournament, the final order of those three teams has yet to be determined and one of them will be denied a first-round bye and have to play a home quarterfinal on Oct. 31.

Meanwhile, in the midtable, teams are still hunting to either lock up a home quarterfinal date or qualify for the conference tournament as one of the CCIW’s top six teams. Wheaton College currently leads that chasing pack and is in fourth place overall, but ends the regular season on Saturday with a trip to face Illinois Wesleyan, a match that could propel the Thunder over IWU for seeding purposes if they win and finish level on points and own a head-to-head tiebreaker.

Below Wheaton, Millikin University and Augustana College are currently clinging to the fifth and sixth spots in the CCIW Tournament, with Carroll University nipping at both of their heels. Six conference matches remain to be played in the next seven days and all of them will have an effect on the final standings.

Regional Rankings/Statistical Leaders
No change once again this week as North Park continues to be among the teams receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, while in the Region VIII rankings, things stay the same as the Vikings are ranked third, North Central in sixth, and Illinois Wesleyan in seventh.

In this week's stats analysis, we'll take a closer look at CCIW-only statistics with the regular season almost wrapped up. North Central has been the conference's highest-scoring team against CCIW foes, netting 17 goals in seven matches and scoring at least two goals in each of its last five games. Illinois Wesleyan has allowed a league-low four goals through seven matches, with three of those coming in a loss to Millikin. The Titans have put together shutouts in five of their six other contests.

North Central's Aleks Duncevic and Millikin's Bryce Davis are tied at the top of the CCIW for goals scored in all games this season with nine. However, in CCIW matches, Wheaton's Luke Vander Kolk leads the way with five goals through seven matches. Duncevic is one goal back of Vander Kolk with four scored against conference competition. Millikin's Olav Kaldahl is the CCIW's leader in assists in all matches played this season as well as CCIW matches, handing out six helpers in league and nine overall on the year.

As the last line in Illinois Wesleyan's sturdy defense, Owen Boukalik tops the CCIW in conference matches with a goals-against average of 0.58 and four shutouts to his credit. He is also second in save percentage at .818 to Elias Banke of Augustana, who currently leads the CCIW with an .840 save percentage with two matches to play for the Viking keeper. Banke also leads with an average of 7.00 saves per match in CCIW play.
