NAPERVILLE – On the eve of the tip-off of the league’s postseason tournament, the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) released its 2022-23 All-CCIW Teams, Monday afternoon.
Tyson Cruickshank of Wheaton was voted CCIW Fred Young Most Outstanding Student-Athlete. Carthage’s Julian Campbell was chosen as CCIW First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year, while Mike Schauer of regular-season winner Wheaton was named CCIW Coach of the Year.
A graduate student from Highlands Ranch, Colo., Cruickshank led the Thunder to its first CCIW title since 2009 as the conference’s leading scorer at 19.8 points per game during the 16-game league schedule. He also distributed a league-best 4.94 assists per game and ranked eighth with 6.1 rebounds on average.
Cruickshank – now a four-time All-CCIW selection – also shot 50.2 percent from the floor, sixth-most among players with at least five field goals made per game. His 53 3-pointers in league action were most in the CCIW and his shooting percentage from beyond the arc of 44.2 was tops among players with at least two makes per game.
Campbell, a freshman center from Lansing, Ill., appeared in 23 games and made nine starts overall for the third-place Firebirds. He averaged 12.1 points on 52 percent shooting to go along with 4.9 boards per game. He put up double-doubles in late-season matchups with Wheaton and Augustana.
Schauer, the 14th-year head coach of the Thunder, is a first-time CCIW Coach of the Year. He piloted Wheaton to a 22-3 overall mark, a 14-2 CCIW record and a top-10 national ranking since Jan. 9. The Thunder won the CCIW outright regular-season title, its first since the 2008-09 campaign.
North Central’s Matt Helwig joins Cruickshank as repeat First-Team choices. Carthage’s Fillip Bulatovic is a member of the First Team for the second time and is a three-time All-CCIW selection overall. Elmhurst’s Jonathan Zapinksi, Illinois Wesleyan’s Cody Mitchell, North Park’s Shamar Pumphrey and Kolden Vanlandingham and Wheaton’s TJ Askew are all first-time honorees.
Dan Carr of Augustana is now a three-time All-CCIW selection. The seven other Second-Team picks are first-time recipients.
