NAPERVILLE – Illinois Wesleyan junior Evan Turnbull and North Central junior Ramon Vilarroig Martinez have been voted College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Co-Student-Athletes of the Week in men’s tennis, according to an announcement from the league office on Wednesday morning. Both players were unbeaten on spring-break trips to Orlando, Fla. last week.
Turnbull’s record was unblemished on the Titans’ trip to Orlando – eight victories without a defeat between singles and doubles competition. The Bloomington, Ill. native didn’t lose a singles set from the #5 spot in the lineup, producing wins in duals against Emerson, Colby-Sawyer, Ohio Wesleyan and Franciscan as IWU improved its 2022-23 dual record to 8-4. In doubles play, Turnbull played alongside Ryan McCoy and Griffin Hammond en route to four wins.
Vilarroig Martinez was also perfect during the week, putting up a 5-0 record for the Cardinals in Orlando. He was victorious in all three of his singles contests from the top of the NCC lineup, including a 2-6, 6-2, 10-8 triumph over 33rd-ranked Jack Bulger of Denison last Monday. Vilarroig Martinez’s two doubles wins were at #1 with teammate Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez against Transylvania and Macalester.
