NAPERVILLE – Augustana, just four days removed from clinching its first outright College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) regular-season title since 2014, placed a league-high nine student-athletes on the All-CCIW Baseball Teams released by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
Elmhurst outfielder Trey Romay, a graduate student from Downers Grove, Ill., was selected CCIW Student-Athlete of the Year. The CCIW Pitcher of the Year award recipient was Augustana right-hander Harrison Boushele, while Millikin freshman outfielder Sam Bushur collected the league’s First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year honor.
Greg Wallace, the Vikings’ 26th-year head coach, was voted CCIW Coach of the Year for the fourth time.
Romay is Elmhurst’s first baseball Student-Athlete of the Year since 2009 after leading the league’s 18-game schedule in home runs (7), slugging percentage (.887) and OPS (1.431). Romay, who is now a three-time All-CCIW First Team selection and was named CCIW Student-Athlete of the Week on March 6, also put up a .405 batting average with 23 runs scored, 18 RBI and six stolen bases over 62 CCIW at-bats.
For the full season, Romay’s .782 slugging percentage ranks 35th in Division III.
On the hill, Boushele paced all CCIW pitchers with a 1.47 earned-run average, 43.0 innings pitched, four wins and 49 strikeouts during the conference schedule. He was a five-time CCIW Student-Athlete of the Week as Augie’s ace, striking out nine batters or more in four of his six CCIW starts. The junior from Aurora, Colo., who ranks fourth nationally with 102 strikeouts this spring, is the first Augustana CCIW Pitcher of the Year since Walter White in 2016.
Bushur is the only freshman among the 33 student-athletes to earn All-CCIW status. The MU outfielder ranked among the CCIW leaders with 23 RBI (second), eight stolen bases (fifth), 19 runs scored (eighth) and 26 hits (ninth). The Teutopolis, Ill. native made all 18 CCIW starts for the Big Blue, putting up a .382 average with eight extra-base hits and a .574 slugging percentage.
Wallace guided Augie to a CCIW regular-season championship for the sixth time in league history. The Vikings finished the regular season 34-6 overall and 16-2 in the league to win the regular-season crown by four games. Augie’s .889 win percentage in league play was the highest by a CCIW regular-season champion since Carthage went 18-1 (.947) in 2009.
The 1988 Augustana grad will take the Vikings into Wednesday’s CCIW Tournament with a 16-game win streak and a national ranking of #17 according to Monday’s D3baseball.com poll.
Three of the 16 players on Tuesday’s All-CCIW First Team were also on the First Team in 2022 – Romay, North Park’s Justin Swanson and Wheaton’s Ben Weaver.
Seven student-athletes repeated as All-CCIW selections overall, while Romay, Weaver, North Central’s Dom Listi and Justin Rios and Augustana’s Matt Ozanic are three-time honorees.
