NAPERVILLE – The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) selected Zane Walters of Carroll (offense) and Riley Johnson of North Central (defense) as the league’s Student-Athletes of the Week in men’s soccer on Tuesday morning.
Offense: Zane Walters, Carroll
Walters scored twice and also had two assists for the Pioneers last week, leading CU to a 2-0-0 mark. The junior from Rochelle, Ill. tallied the match-winning goal in the 24th minute of the Pios’ 6-0 win over Beloit last Wednesday. He also assisted on two second-half goals in the victory. Three days later in Carroll’s 4-2 win over Millikin the CCIW opener, Walters connected on the match winner again in the 54th minute.
Defense: Riley Johnson, North Central
A sophomore goalkeeper from Lombard, Ill., Johnson had back-to-back shutouts for the Cardinals last week in wins over Lake Forest and Elmhurst. He stopped the only shot that reached him in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over the Foresters, then had five saves in the full 90 minutes in Saturday’s league opener against the Bluejays at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
