CCIW Announces Week 1 Football Student-Athletes of the Week

NAPERVILLE – The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) has announced its Student-Athletes of the Week from the first week of the 2023 football season.

Offense: Matt Rush, WashU
Rush completed 15 passes for 277 and four touchdowns in the Bears’ 44-27 season-opening win at Hendrix. Three of his touchdown passes came after halftime. The fifth-year quarterback from Hinsdale, Ill. also rushed three times for 23 yards and a second-quarter touchdown. Monday’s announcement marks Rush’s first career CCIW Student-Athlete of the Week selection.

Defense: Bryce Gable, Elmhurst
Gable, a fifth-year linebacker from Grandville, Mich., stuffed the staff sheet in Elmhurst’s 14-3 win over Adrian at Langhorst Field. His 54-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter marked the first score of the day and gave the Bluejays the lead for good. He also tallied nine tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Gable is now a two-time weekly winner from the CCIW after previously being recognized on Oct. 11, 2021.

Special Teams: Joren Clem, Augustana
Clem connected on a pair of extra-point attempts and punted three times to help Augustana in its 49-27 road win at Simpson. Clem converted both of his point-after attempts after halftime and averaged 39.3 yards on three punts, including a fourth-quarter punt that was downed inside the 20-yard-line.
