NAPERVILLE – The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) named 12 student-athletes to its annual All-CCIW Women’s Tennis Team on Tuesday morning. North Central junior Abigail Penados repeated as the CCIW Student-Athlete of the Year, the seventh women’s tennis student-athlete in league history to earn the award in consecutive seasons.
Additionally, NCC freshman Priya Harris was voted CCIW First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year. Wheaton’s Jane Nelson was the CCIW Coach of the Year recipient for the 10th time, most in league history.
Penados finished the CCIW schedule with a perfect 8-0 record from #1 singles and joins former Cardinal Kaeli Smashey (2020-21) as repeat winners of the league’s Student-Athlete of the Year award. Penados was also perfect against league opponents in doubles play, pairing with All-CCIW Second Team honoree Kensington Payne to go 8-0 from the top of the Cardinals’ lineup.
Harris was also perfect in singles competition, putting an 8-0 CCIW record from the third slot in the NCC lineup. The Lake Fort Worth, Fla. native also won five doubles bouts with Ainara Casado Cedillo. Harris is the third North Central player to earn the league’s First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year award alongside Hannah Hougland (2018) and Smashey (2020).
Nelson guided Wheaton to a 7-1 CCIW dual record and a share of its first league championships since 2019. The Thunder have won 23 CCIW titles overall, most in league history and all during Nelson’s tenure as head coach. Tuesday’s announcement marks her first CCIW Coach of the Year award since 2019.
North Park, which shared the league championship with North Central and Wheaton, was the only team to have two All-CCIW First Team selections – Alexandra Ristfeldt and Hanna Zethraeus.
Tuesday’s announcement also marked three straight First Team selections for two players – Penados and Wheaton’s Madeline Gentry. Zethraeus earned a spot on the First Team for the second consecutive season.
One player honored Tuesday was on the All-CCIW Team for the fourth consecutive year – Millikin’s Emily Markus. The senior from Irvine, Calif. was a First Team choice as a freshman in 2021 and received her third straight Second Team nod on Tuesday.
In all, eight of the 12 All-CCIW honorees were repeat selections from a year ago.
