NAPERVILLE – One day before the start of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men’s Lacrosse Tournament, 26 student-athletes were announced as recipients of All-CCIW honors in men’s lacrosse on Tuesday afternoon.
CCIW regular-season runner-up Elmhurst received three postseason especially awards – Offensive Student-Athlete of the Year Eli Spence, First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year Hunter Hernandez and Coach of the Year Mark Morrell. The Bluejays placed a league-best nine student-athletes on the All-CCIW Team.
Michael Campagna of regular-season champion Illinois Wesleyan was voted CCIW Defensive Student-Athlete of the Year by league head coaches. He was one eight Titans to receive All-CCIW accolades on Tuesday.
Spence – who was the league’s First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year last spring – was the league’s leader in points this season. He tallied 12 goals and 13 assists in four starts against CCIW opponents and will enter Wednesday’s CCIW Tournament ranked sixth in Division III over the full season with 6.0 points per game.
Campagna appeared in four league games and finished the contests with 12 ground balls and three caused turnovers. The Arlington Heights, Ill. native helped anchor an IWU defense that yielded just 43 goals and had a plus-11.6 average scoring margin against CCIW opponents. Campagna is now a three-time All-CCIW selection and on the First Team for the first time.
Hernandez became the fifth Bluejay to be CCIW First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year after scoring a league-high 18 goals in five CCIW appearances. He was the conference’s seventh leading scorer overall at 3.8 points per game and established career highs with five goals and six points in EU’s win over Carroll on April 24.
The coaches’ vote for CCIW Coach of the Year went to Morrell, his second time winning the award after previously winning in 2018. The Bluejays finished second in the league with a 4-1 record, boasted the conference’s top defensive unit by allowing only 36 goals and committed a league-low 16.8 turnovers per game.
