NAPERVILLE – Chicago senior Lulu Hardy repeated as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Offensive Student-Athlete of the Year, one of nine Maroons to earn postseason honors when the league announced its All-CCIW Teams in women’s lacrosse on Tuesday morning.
Grace Tumilty of Carroll was voted Defensive Student-Athlete of the Year. Carthage scoring ace August Claridge claimed the league’s First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year award, while Firebirds’ head coach Rebecca Congel was chosen by her peers as the CCIW Coach of the Year.
Twenty-four student-athletes received All-CCIW on Tuesday. Carroll matched Chicago for the most First Team selections with four. Ten of the 24 selections were repeat honorees, including consecutive First Team choices for Rachel Keefe and Hardy of Chicago.
Hardy joins Augustana’s Anne Hopkins (2016-17) as the only repeat Offensive Student-Athlete of the Year selections in league history. She drove the Maroons’ league-leading offensive attack, averaging 4.17 goals and 1.33 assists for 5.5 points per game in league action. She was the only player in the conference to average at least 4.0 goals and 1.0 assists per game.
Tumilty delivered 3.33 ground balls and 2.67 caused turnovers per game across the league’s six-game schedule. She was named CCIW Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week on March 26 and her defensive presence helped the Pioneers limit their opponents to five goals or less in each of their last four games leading into the tournament.
Claridge emerged as the league’s top scorer, tallying 35 goals and 41 points to lead all players during the conference schedule. She is the fourth Firebird to earn CCIW First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year honors and the first since Nicole Bowman in 2017. Claridge entered Tuesday with 77 goals over the full season, sixth-most in Division III.
Congel navigated Carthage to a second-place finish in the final league standings and a home game in Wednesday’s CCIW Tournament semifinal round. The second-year coach, who had the interim tag removed midway through the 2023 season, led the Firebirds to 10 wins and the league’s second-ranked offense in goals per game (16.0), shots per game (30.83) and points per game (21.33).
Additionally, six student-athletes were named a recipient of the CCIW RESPECT award, given to student-athletes that have distinguished themselves as an integral member of the team, their institution and community by upholding the values of Responsibility, Enthusiasm, Service, Pride, Excellence, Collaboration and Trust.
