NAPERVILLE – The Softball All-College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Teams were announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.
League champion Illinois Wesleyan saw seven of its players land on the All-CCIW First Team, including CCIW Defensive Student-Athlete of the Year Bailey Turner and CCIW Pitcher of the Year Gianna Certa. The Titans’ coaching staff, headed by eighth-year head coach Tiffany Prager, was voted CCIW Coaching Staff of the Year.
Additionally, Carthage sophomore outfielder Clare Rettler earned the CCIW Offensive Student-Athlete of the Year award and North Central freshman pitcher Juliana Maude was voted CCIW First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year.
Rettler finished the CCIW schedule as the league leader in batting average (.508), hits (32) and stolen bases (18). She was also in the top-five among conference hitters with a .551 on-base percentage (second) and 15 runs scored (fifth).
The Appleton, Wis. native will enter Thursday’s CCIW Tournament opener as the national leader over the full season with a .569 batting average and 78 hits in 40 starts. Rettler hit safely in all but two games this spring and had 24 multi-hit games. She is Carthage’s first CCIW postseason specialty award winner since Katie Herron was voted Pitcher of the Year in 2017.
Turner, a senior, is the second recipient of the CCIW Defensive Student-Athlete of the Year award. The IWU second baseman was perfect in 51 defensive chances in 16 league starts and had a season-best eight putouts in the Titans’ win over North Park on April 21. The effort from the Normal, Ill. native helped IWU produce a league-best .990 fielding percentage during the conference schedule.
Certa became the first Titan to receive CCIW Pitcher of the Year honors since Ally Wiegand in 2019 after finishing the 16-game conference schedule atop the individual CCIW leaderboard with eight wins, a 0.41 earned-run average and an opponents’ batting average of .174. Her 39 strikeouts were third-most in the league across 51.0 innings of work.
Maude threw 61.1 innings for the Cardinals, second-most among all CCIW pitchers in league action. She stacked up 50 strikeouts, second-most in the league, while her six victories ranked third and 1.26 ERA ranked fourth.
Prager and her coaching staff have earned the CCIW Coaching Staff of the Year two years in a row and three times during Prager’s tenure as coach in Bloomington. The Titans won their second consecutive league title, pacing the CCIW in batting average (.357) and slugging percentage (.490) while ranking third in ERA (2.10).
