GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Carroll's women's lacrosse team came within two minutes of winning their first-ever NCAA Tournament game Saturday afternoon, but a pair of Lake Forest goals in the final two minutes of the contest ended the Pios' seven-game winning streak and one of the most successful seasons in program history with a 13-12 loss to the Foresters.

Playing the program's second-ever NCAA Tournament game, and first since 2021, Carroll (13-4) dug themselves an early hole, as Lake Forest (15-4) built a 5-0 lead after one quarter of play. Carroll then showed their perseverance, which they displayed all season long, getting on the board with 11 and a half minutes remaining in the second quarter on Elizabeth Wang's team-leading 57th goal of the season. That was the first of four consecutive goals for the Pios, as Elaina Phaneuf scored twice in the ensuing two minutes, before Abby Tubbs cut the lead to 5-4 on an assist from Wang mid-way through the quarter. Lake Forest's Ella Maher then scored her third goal of the day with under four minutes left before halftime, but Wang answered with another goal just one and a half minutes later, butting LFC's lead to 6-5 at the half.

Lake Forest would score the first goal of the second half, but Sierra Skack answered less than 30 seconds later with a goal of her own, thanks to an assist from Grace Brockman, who would add another assist five minutes later on Phaneuf's third goal of the day, which tied the score at seven. Already boasting the most career assists in program history, Brockman tied the program's single season assist record with her 30th of the year. That also tied a team single season record with 101 assists on the year.

Two and a half minutes later, Wang put Carroll in front for the first time in the contest with her fourth goal of the day. Phaneuf would add another goal later in the third period to take a 9-7 advantage, but Lake Forest battled back with three consecutive goals to grab the lead back in the opening minute of the final quarter. That lead lasted four and a half minutes, until Samantha Hurd found the net to tie the game at 10. After Jenna Doctor put LFC up by one mid-way through the period, Wang scored for the fifth time to knot the game up at 11. As the intensity mounted, Lauren Fricke got into the scoring action, slipping one by the goalie on a free position shot to give Carroll a 12-11 lead with two minutes left in regulation. Thirty seconds later, Lake Forest added a goal by Shannon Gibbons to tie the game at 12. Carroll would have an opportunity for a game-winner, but a turnover turned into a fast-break for the Foresters, and Ashley Carr would finish it off with a game-winner for the Foresters with 11 seconds on the clock.

Lake Forest out-shot Carroll 29-26 on the day, with 16 of the Pios' 26 shots coming on goal. The Pioneers also forced 24 Lake Forest turnovers, while committing 22 of their own.

Carroll was led by Wang's five goals and one assist, while Phaneuf also had a hat trick with three goals. Goal Keeper Devon Duym played the entire game, recording seven saves on the day.

Lake Forest saw five players score at least two goals, led by Maher's three scores. Emma Sharp led the Foresters with a game-high five assists. Goal Keeper Cecilia Adams played all 60 minutes for LFC, recording nine saves.

That wraps up a season in which Carroll fell just one win shy of the program's single season record of 14, which was set last season. The Pioneers are now 40-12 over the last three seasons combined.
