All-CCIW Baseball Teams Announced Tuesday

NAPERVILLE – The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) unveiled its annual All-Conference Baseball Teams on Tuesday afternoon.

Carthage swept the CCIW Student-Athlete of the Year and CCIW Pitcher of the Year awards. Senior shortstop Collin Callahan was voted CCIW Student-Athlete of the Year, while graduate left-hander Ryan Scanlon was named CCIW Pitcher of the Year.

Caleb Akins, a freshman pitcher at Millikin, was selected CCIW First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year. First-year Illinois Wesleyan head coach Michael Kellar was tabbed CCIW Coach of the Year.

Callahan played in all 20 games for the Firebirds, hitting .417 in league play with five home runs and 24 runs batted in. He added 11 walks to boost a .505 on-base percentage and stacked up 58 total bases to slug at a .690 clip. The Lake Zurich, Ill. native led the league in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. He hit safely in all but two CCIW games and had 11 multi-hit games, including a 4-for-4 effort at Millikin on April 18.

Scanlon, a native of Gurnee, Ill., threw 36.2 innings in total appearances – five of which were starts – and posted a 2.21 earned-run average. His CCIW record was 4-0 and he tallied 42 strikeouts while limiting opposing lineups to a .221 batting average. Scanlon, one of only three CCIW pitchers to win four games during the league schedule, struck out a season-high 11 in 8.0 innings in the Firebirds’ 4-0 shutout at North Central on April 30.

Akins was one of only two freshmen selected to the All-CCIW First Team on Tuesday after posting a 2.34 ERA in six starts and 34.2 innings pitched. He struck out 36 while allowing only 20 hits and 13 walks for a 0.96 WHIP. Opposing hitters hit a league-low .168 against Akins, who didn’t allow a home run against a CCIW opponent. He struck out a career-high 12 batters in a complete-game win over North Central on April 13.

Following a six-year tenure as an assistant coach, Kellar took the reins of the IWU program last June and ultimately led the Titans to their first CCIW regular-season title since 2013. Illinois Wesleyan went 16-4 during the conference schedule and led the league in batting average (338), runs scored per game (8.35) and on-base percentage (.405). The Titans closed the conference schedule with 10 consecutive wins, including a three-game sweep of Carthage on May 2-3 that secured the league championship.
