The CCIW Men’s Soccer Notebook: The Stretch Run Begins

A draw between North Central and North Park on Wednesday maintained the status quo at the top, while Wheaton and Millikin’s were this week’s big movers.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - After a thrilling night of action on Wednesday, the top two teams in CCIW men’s soccer entering the night – North Central and North Park – stayed there following an entertaining 2-2 draw, but the number of teams within three points of the top climbed to five after road wins by Millikin and Wheaton.

The Big Blue and the Thunder are each riding two-match winning streaks and will look to keep rising on Saturday as Millikin hosts Augustana and Wheaton welcomes in Elmhurst. On Wednesday night, the Thunder will have a major opportunity to upend the standings as they host co-leaders North Central.

Regional Rankings/Statistical Leaders
After reaching No. 22 in last week’s United Soccer Coaches poll, a draw with Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday slipped North Park into the receiving votes subset of the national rankings. Regionally, the rankings stayed the same with the Vikings in third, North Central in the sixth spot in Region VIII and Illinois Wesleyan in seventh.

A three-goal outburst from Millikin on Wednesday night against Illinois Wesleyan’s vaunted defense keeps the Big Blue with a scoring average of 2.50 goals per game on the year. That number actually has ticked down slightly in conference play, with Millikin tied with Wheaton for the most goals scored in the CCIW with 11, but the Thunder have done so in one less match for an average of 2.20 goals per game.

A big week from North Central’s Aleks Duncevic has taken him top of the goal charts on the season with nine, while teammate Joseph Sargent is one back with eight on the year. Duncevic has been a penalty specialist for the Cardinals, converting all five of his spot kicks on the season. Olav Kaldahl tallied yet another assist for Millikin and leads the CCIW with eight this season (five in conference play).

While Illinois Wesleyan’s Owen Boukalik and Augustana’s Elias Banke continue to lead the main goalkeeping categories on the year, North Central’s Sebastian Herrera is coming on strong. Called into action beginning earlier this month at Elmhurst, Herrera is the leader in goals-against average (0.52) and save percentage (.867) in CCIW play and one of three keepers in the league along with Boukalik (0.83) and North Park's Melker Regland (0.97) with a GAA under 1.00 against conference foes.
