The CCIW Men’s Soccer Notebook: The Midway Point of Conference Play

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The next week in CCIW men’s soccer features four conference matchups on Saturday and another four on Wednesday night, providing more clarity than ever on which teams will be lacing it up for the CCIW Tournament. By this time next week, every team will have played at least half of their eight CCIW fixtures.

After a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Carthage on Wednesday night, North Park has vaulted into first place in the standings at 3-0, but a big week awaits the Vikings. A three-team logjam is behind NPU in a tie for second place at 2-0-1 in the league and North Park will face two of those three teams in the next seven days. First up is a Saturday afternoon home match with Illinois Wesleyan before a Wednesday night clash with North Central. The Cardinals will also face the other team currently tied for second, Carroll, on Saturday afternoon.

National Rankings/Statistical Leaders
One week after debuting at No. 25 in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, North Park has catapulted three spots up to No. 22 in the nation and holds steady at No. 3 in Region VIII. Behind the Vikings in Region III are North Central at No. 6 and Illinois Wesleyan at No. 7.

There will be goals when Millikin takes the field. The Big Blue have tallied a CCIW-best 31 times on the season (an average of 2.58 goals per game), but also rank last in the conference having conceded 30 times (2.50 per game). Illinois Wesleyan added another shutout to its résumé on Wednesday night in a 4-0 win over Elmhurst and have now allowed only three goals in nine matches this season for an average of 0.33 goals against. The Titans also lead the CCIW in total shots (220) and corners (69). While their 18 saves on the season rank last in the conference, the team's save percentage of .842 is atop the league by percentage points over Augustana (.841).

Joseph Sargent of North Central added a goal to his haul this season and is now tied with Millikin's Bryce Davis as the top goalscorer in the CCIW with seven on the year. Olav Kaldahl of the Big Blue continues to lead the conference in assists, picking up two more in the past week to sit on seven for the year.

Given its defensive record as a team, it's no surprise that Illinois Wesleyan's Owen Boukalik is the conference leader in both goals-against average (0.27) and save percentage (.846). Elias Banke of Augustana gets a shout here for his work in goal both in terms of quantity and quality. Banke is second to Boukalik in the CCIW in save percentage at .836, but he leads the conference in saves (56) and saves per game (6.22) while notching three shutouts on the season.
