NAPERVILLE — Carthage maintained its perfect league record, while Illinois Wesleyan moved into second place following two five-set victories to headline the latest news in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) men’s volleyball.
Augustana and North Central also secured conference wins to remain in the upper half of the standings.
Shifting Standings in a Five-Set Week
The previous week featured six key results that altered the conference race. Last Saturday, Carthage secured a 3-0 victory over Loras with set scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-23. Ben Heise recorded 13 kills and Ryan Bartz added eight kills for the Firebirds.
Also on Saturday, Illinois Wesleyan defeated North Central 3-2 in Bloomington. Ethan Kuziela powered the Titans with 20 kills, while Brannen Almarales led the Cardinals with 15 kills and 13 digs ... Augustana completed the Saturday schedule with a 3-0 sweep of North Park. Alexander Sulewski hit .692 with nine kills for Augustana, and Colin Alvers paced the defense with 11 digs.
On Tuesday, Augustana moved to 8-4 overall with a 3-1 non-conference win over Clarke. Aidan Bolen led the Vikings with 12 kills, and Colin Schaefer anchored the offense with 38 assists.
Midweek action on Wednesday produced two additional results. Illinois Wesleyan earned a 3-2 road win against Loras, claiming set scores of 30-28, 17-25, 21-25, 25-19, and 15-11. Ethan Kuziela matched a school record with 23 kills in the victory, while Bryce Williams contributed 14 kills ... North Central evened its conference record at 2-2 with a 3-0 sweep of North Park on Wednesday. Brannen Almarales led the match with 14 kills and five blocks, and Mitchell Hester recorded eight kills while hitting .500 for the Cardinals.
Individual Excellence Highlights the Mid-Season Slate
Individual performances from the previous week impacted conference and national leaderboards. Ethan Kuziela of Illinois Wesleyan opened the week with a triple-double against North Central last Saturday, recording 20 kills, 27 assists, 12 digs and five blocks. He followed on Wednesday against Loras with 23 kills on a .600 hitting percentage, 25 assists, and seven digs. Kuziela’s four triple-doubles this season currently rank first in the nation.
Carthage’s Ben Heise earned Hitter of the Week recognition from the league after totaling 16 kills and hitting .370 across two matches, including 13 kills and two service aces in the Saturday sweep of Loras ... Augustana freshman Colin Alvers was named CCIW Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week, totaling 38 digs while averaging 3.45 per set. His week included 11 digs in the sweep of North Park and 12 digs in the victory over Clarke.
Brannen Almarales of North Central maintained production throughout the week, recording 15 kills and 13 digs against Illinois Wesleyan last Saturday, followed by 14 kills and five blocks against North Park on Wednesday.
National Prominence and Statistical Dominance
CCIW teams and individuals currently hold several top positions on national statistical leaderboards. Through Wednesday, Carthage leads the nation in team hitting percentage at .330 … Illinois Wesleyan holds the national lead in both kills per set (13.61) and assists per set (12.49).
Individual national rankings include IWU’s Ethan Kuziela, who is ranked first in the country with four triple-doubles … Hudson Sweitzer of Carthage ranks second nationally in hitting percentage at .487 … Evan Dziadkowiec of Loras is fifth in the nation in assists per set with a value of 10.23, while Colin Schaefer of Augustana follows in 16th at 9.44.
Within conference-only statistical categories, Ryan Bartz of Carthage leads the league in kills per set at 3.52 and points per set at 4.35 … Chris Mactal of North Central leads the CCIW in blocks per set at 0.93 … Colin Alvers of Augustana is the league leader in digs per set at 3.13, followed closely by Jonathan Brown of North Central at 3.12 … Carthage also leads the conference in service aces per set at 1.92, with Bartz averaging a league-high 0.50 aces per set.
Assessing the Conference Standings
The current conference standings as of Thursday show Carthage in first place with a 3-0 record and a 12-2 overall mark. Illinois Wesleyan occupies second place at 3-1 in the conference following its two five-set wins. Augustana sits in third place with a 2-1 conference record, while North Central moved to 2-2 to hold the fourth position.
Loras is currently fifth at 1-3, having lost three consecutive matches, and North Park is in sixth at 0-4.
Critical Matchups Looming for Contenders
The upcoming schedule features several matches with significant standings implications.
On Saturday, Carthage (3-0) travels to Augustana (2-1) for a matchup between two of the top three teams in the current standings. This match features the league’s leading defense in Carthage, which allows a conference-low .167 opponent hitting percentage, against an Augustana team ranked second in that same category ... Also on Saturday, North Park visits Illinois Wesleyan, a match featuring the national leader in team kills per set.
Next Wednesday, Augustana travels to Illinois Wesleyan in a contest between teams currently separated by only half a game for second place in the standings.
Historical Achievements and Program Milestones
The previous week included several program-firsts and historic marks. Illinois Wesleyan defeated North Central last Saturday for the first win over the Cardinals in program history. The Titans followed that by defeating #11 Loras on Wednesday, which marked the best ranked win in program history.
Individually, Ethan Kuziela's 23 kills against Loras tied the IWU record for kills in a five-set match … For North Central, Jonathan Brown tied for the eighth-most digs in a single match in program history with 17 digs against Illinois Wesleyan … Additionally, Carthage’s win over Loras on Saturday extended the team’s current winning streak to four matches.
