NAPERVILLE — With the indoor season concluded and outdoor competition underway, College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) programs opened the spring schedule with a series of meets across the Midwest and South.
The first week of action included multiple school records, nationally ranked performances and a number of personal-best efforts as teams adjusted to outdoor conditions and expanded event distances. Competition during the final week of March included appearances at the WashU Distance Carnival, as well as invitationals hosted in Naperville and Wheaton.
Going the Distance: Sorg and Curulewski Rewrite the Long-Run Standards
Distance events produced several of the conference’s top performances at the WashU Distance Carnival last Friday. North Central’s BJ Sorg recorded a fifth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 29:23.88, which ranks first in the conference and fourth nationally while placing him sixth on the program’s all-time list.
Carthage’s Jacob Curulewski also set a school record in the event, finishing in 29:43.54 to rank second in the conference and seventh in Division III. Additional personal-best efforts for North Central came from Ari Elmayan (30:39.59), Daniel Kasperan (30:40.50) and Koen McMillan (31:46.81).
Everything’s Coming Up Roses: Carthage Senior Sweeps Throws in Naperville
At the North Central First Chance Invitational last weekend, Carthage’s Tyler Rose recorded three event victories in the throwing disciplines. Rose won the shot put (15.57 meters), discus (51.22 meters), and hammer throw (54.21 meters), with his discus and hammer marks establishing personal bests. He currently leads the conference in all three events and holds national rankings of fourth in the discus, 12th in the hammer, and 23rd in the shot put.
Teammate Caleb Haas-Rock added fifth-place and seventh-place finishes in the hammer (45.17 meters) and discus (40.43 meters), respectively.
Speed Traps: Reed and Bledsoe Burn Up the Track in Record Time
Sprint events at the Wheaton Invitational on Tuesday resulted in a school record and multiple personal-best performances. Wheaton’s Isaac Bledsoe set a new program record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.41 seconds, surpassing a mark that had stood since 1955. The time ranks second in the conference and tied for 11th nationally.
North Central’s Randy Reed won both the 100-meter (10.62) and 200-meter (21.38) dashes, with his 100-meter time ranking fourth in program history. Teammate Alexander Knight placed third in both events with times of 10.79 and 22.02, respectively.
Cardinal Rule: North Central Dominates 10 Events at Wheaton Invitational
North Central totaled 10 event victories at the Wheaton Invitational, with contributions across multiple disciplines. Tyler Schick won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:41.24, improving his personal best by 16 seconds. Jacob Kluckhohn added a victory in the 3,000-meter run (8:52.92), finishing with a significant margin over the field. In the 400-meter hurdles, Travis Hoffman won in 54.56 seconds, while Christian Kokot placed second (57.89). North Central also swept the top three spots in the discus with Ben Balboa (49.57 meters), Daniel Dominguez (43.95 meters), and Riley Adams (43.46 meters). Balboa later added a win in the shot put (15.20 meters).
Taking Flight: Leise and Bova Lead Conference Jumpers
Jump events featured several high-level performances across the conference. North Central’s Jayden Leise won the triple jump at the First Chance Invitational (14.36 meters) and followed with another victory at Wheaton (13.90 meters).
Wheaton’s Ty Bova cleared 2.00 meters to win the high jump at the same meet. Carthage’s Camron Foster recorded a 14.34-meter jump to place second and currently ranks eighth nationally. North Park’s Darrius Whiters posted a personal-best 13.60 meters to finish among the top five.
Southern Exposure and Local Pride: Vikings and Titans Showcase Early Depth
Augustana competed at the UAB Spring Invitational last weekend, where Magnus Wells placed third in the shot put (14.60 meters) and fourth in the discus (44.79 meters). Conner Calhoun added a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (16.08).
Illinois Wesleyan saw Alex Maas win the 400-meter dash (50.38) at the Big Blue Alumni Invite on Saturday, while Gavin Gonzalez placed third in the javelin (54.17 meters) at the Redbird Challenge on Saturday. Millikin recorded multiple results at its home meet, including a second-place finish from Emmett Emmons in the 400 meters (50.67) and a first-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay (3:25.05).
The Road Ahead: April Action Begins Across the Region
Conference programs will continue outdoor competition this week with meets scheduled across the region. Carthage and Carroll are set to compete at the Wisconsin Private College Championships on Thursday, while Millikin will compete at the IC Thursday Throwdown.
Augustana will divide its squad between the Southern Miss Invitational and the Viking Olympics this weekend. Illinois Wesleyan is scheduled to compete at the Huntsman Family Invitational.
