NAPERVILLE — The women’s outdoor track and field season is underway, with institutions from the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) opening competition across multiple regional meets. Early results have produced conference-leading performances and several marks that rank among the top efforts in NCAA Division III.
Throwing Down the Gauntlet
Augustana recorded one of the top early-season performances in the discus last Saturday at the UAB Spring Invitational, as Charlotte Frere delivered a throw of 48.07 meters that currently leads both the conference and the nation. Teammate Laina Nelson added a sixth-place finish in the event with a mark of 38.01 meters.
At the First Chance Invitational in Naperville, Carthage’s Jackie Tuzil won the discus with a throw of 44.68 meters, which ranks second in the CCIW and seventh nationally. Madison Payne secured victories in both the hammer throw (45.73m) and the shot put (12.57m), while Carthage placed four athletes among the top finishers in the shot put, including Lillian Townsend (12.08m), Caylene Von-Schilling Worth (12.06m), and Tuzil (11.85m).
Vaulting into the National Spotlight
The pole vault has produced multiple nationally-ranked performances early in the season. North Central’s Gwen Berenyi cleared 3.97 meters at the First Chance Invitational to win the event and move into second on the national list. She followed with another victory at the Wheaton Invitational, clearing 3.70 meters in adverse conditions.
North Park’s Julia Klein matched that 3.70-meter clearance at the same meet to share first place, while her season-best height of 3.82 meters ranks third nationally and second in the conference. North Central’s Caroline Kuttner posted consistent results, finishing second with a 3.67-meter clearance before placing third the following meet at 3.50 meters.
A Fast Start on the Straightaway
Sprint events have produced several conference-leading times. Elmhurst’s Carmela Woods won the 200-meter dash at the Wheaton Invitational in 25.17 seconds, establishing the top time in the conference. She also recorded a personal-best 12.19 seconds in the 100-meter dash to rank second in the CCIW.
Illinois Wesleyan’s Mallory Short posted a conference-leading time of 57.84 seconds in the 400-meter dash at the Redbird Challenge. Wheaton’s Heidi Krekelberg turned in multiple top performances, including a 12.12-second effort in the 100-meter dash at the Wheaton Invitational, along with earlier results of 12.69 in the 100 and 26.03 in the 200 at North Central.
Going the Distance in Record Time
Distance events have also produced early-season marks of note. At the WashU Distance Carnival, Elmhurst’s Sarah Hahn recorded a 1,500-meter time of 4:34.64, which leads the conference and ranks third nationally. Teammate Molly Roberts posted a conference-best 38:06.93 in the 10,000-meter run at the same meet.
North Central’s Dylan Moeller opened her collegiate steeplechase career with an 11:33.36 finish, placing second and ranking among the top performances in program history. Wheaton’s Clodagh O’Bryant secured victories in both the 800-meter run (2:22.81) and 1,500-meter run (4:51.43). Carthage’s Kylie Florance added a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:43.40.
Jumping Ahead of the Competition
Field events in the jumps have produced several leading marks. Illinois Wesleyan’s Imani Ogunribido recorded a triple jump of 12.43 meters at the Redbird Challenge, which leads the conference and ranks second nationally. Teammate Sarah Polley won the same event at the Big Blue Alumni Invite with a mark of 10.46 meters.
In the high jump, North Park’s Alex Ireland and Elmhurst’s Annabeth Webb tied for first at the Wheaton Invitational with clearances of 1.32 meters. Millikin’s Hannah Sago won the high jump at the Big Blue Outdoor Opener with a mark of 1.55 meters, which ranks among the top performances in program history. Carthage’s Christiana Hall recorded a winning mark of 5.34 meters in the long jump.
Hurdling Toward the Postseason
Hurdle events have featured consistent performances across multiple programs. North Central’s Charlotte Rossi recorded a season-best 1:09.10 to win the 400-meter hurdles at the Wheaton Invitational. Wheaton’s Sally Elsen posted a 14.88-second winning time in the 100-meter hurdles after finishing second in the same event the previous meet.
Elmhurst’s Olivia Brach established early conference rankings in both hurdle events, including a 1:09.50 mark in the 400-meter hurdles and a 16.29 effort in the 100-meter hurdles. North Central’s Isabella Valentin added top-three finishes in both events at the earlier meet, recording 15.79 in the 100-meter hurdles and 1:09.75 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Relaying Success at Home and Away
Relay events contributed to several team results during the opening weeks. Carthage’s 4x800-meter relay team set a program record with a time of 9:43.53. Carroll secured the team title at its home meet with 148 points, including victories in the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays. North Central recorded a 4x100-meter relay win in 48.47 seconds, while Millikin closed its home opener with a 4x400-meter relay victory in 4:11.34.
The Road Ahead
CCIW teams will continue outdoor competition across multiple meets this week. Scheduled events include the Wisconsin Private College Championships in Kenosha, the Green & White Invite in Wauwatosa, and the IC Thursday Throwdown in Jacksonville.
Augustana will split competition between meets in Mississippi and Rock Island, while Illinois Wesleyan travels to Indiana for the Huntsman Family Invitational.
