North Central's Hird, Carthage's Mahaffey share men's cross country honors

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – North Central’s Tim Hird and Carthage’s Jake Mahaffey were named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men’s Cross Country Co-Athletes of the Week Tuesday.

Hird, a senior from Rock Island, Illinois and Rock Island-Alleman High School (Sports Management major), finished sixth out of 188 competitors on Friday at the Aurora University Spartan Classic at Oakhurst Forest Preserve. He finished with a time of 25:58.3 on the five-mile course and helped pace the Cardinals to a second place finish in the 17-team event. 

Mahaffey, a senior from Mahomet, Illinois and Mahomet-Seymour High School (Physics & Chemistry double major), was the second collegiate finisher at last Saturday’s Pointer Open, hosted by Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He finished with a personal best time of 21:03 in the four-mile race.

The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) was founded in 1946 and currently services eight member institutions including Augustana College (Rock Island, IL), Carthage College (Kenosha, WI), Elmhurst College (Elmhurst, IL), Illinois Wesleyan University (Bloomington, IL), Millikin University (Decatur, IL), North Central College (Naperville, IL), North Park University (Chicago, IL) and Wheaton College (Wheaton, IL). During the 2011-12 academic year, the CCIW honored 1,323 academic all-conference recipients, 16 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, 1 CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year, 89 all-Americans and three national championship teams.
