Football
Carthage introduced Matt Popino as its new head coach on Jan. 5. During his five seasons on the coaching staff at Endicott, Popino played a pivotal role in the Gulls' football excellence. In that span, Endicott secured three straight Commonwealth Coast Conference championships (2021 through 2023) and reached the NCAA tournament each time. Originally from Metuchen, N.J., Popino has a bachelor's degree in communication from Worcester State University and a master's in applied communications from Fitchburg State University.
Women’s Golf
North Central announced the appointment of Rachel Gray as the head coach for the Cardinals' men's and women's golf programs on Aug. 1. Gray most recently served as an assistant coach for the Northern Illinois men's golf program (2022-2023). She was also the head men's and women's coach at the Saint Scholastica from 2019-2022, leading the women's program to back-to-back Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) championships. As a competitor for the women's golf team at Concordia-St. Paul from 2012 to 2016, Gray earned All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) honors three times
Women’s Soccer
Chris Tadley became the eighth head coach in Carroll history on Jan. 25. Tadley comes to Waukesha from Wisconsin-Madison, where he spent the past two years as a volunteer assistant coach. Prior to his time at UW-Madison, Tadley served as an assistant coach at both Memphis and Lehigh. A 2012 graduate of Albright, Tadley earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Management, before going on to receive his Master of Science in Special Education from Albright in 2017. As an undergrad, Tadley was a three-time MAC Commonwealth Honor Roll recipient.
Men’s Soccer
Carroll announced Andy Kohel as the Pioneers' new head coach on Jan. 4. Kohel brings with him four years of head coaching experience at the NCAA Division III level. Kohel comes to Carroll after spending the last year as Head Coach of the St. Croix Legends of the USL League 2 in Stillwater, Minn. Prior to his time with the Legends, Kohel served as the Head Men's Coach at Concordia-Moorhead in Moorhead, Minn. Kohel earned his Bachelor of Science degree in History from UW-Oshkosh, where he was part of the Titans' 2011 NCAA Division-III Final Four team.
Tim Dean is the new head coach at Elmhurst, announced by the Bluejays on Dec. 22. Dean comes to Elmhurst after spending eight seasons on staff at Lake Forest College. Dean was the Foresters’ interim head coach in the 2023 season, and spent the previous seven seasons as an assistant coach. As the Foresters’ interim head coach last season, Dean guided the team to their second-straight Midwest Conference (MWC) Tournament Championship. Dean graduated from Illinois State in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in marketing, and played on both Grand Valley State and Illinois State's soccer club teams.
Millikin announced the hiring of Charlie Ward on Dec. 5. Most recently, Ward was an assistant at Illinois-Springfield where the squad posted a 13-1-7 record, making the NCAA Division II Tournament. Before UIS, Ward served a two-year stint as a graduate assistant at Upper Iowa. Graduating from Southampton Solent University with a Bachelor's degree in football (soccer) studies, Ward also saw time as the goalkeeping coach for AFC Fawley.
Women’s Volleyball
Former Millikin associate head coach Whitney Nichols was elevated to head coach on Dec. 11. Nichols has been with Millikin for the past two seasons, helping lead the Big Blue to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. Nichols played two years at Illinois Central and two years at Greenville. A 2019 graduate of Greenville, Nichols received her Master's in Sports Management from Dubuque while serving as a graduate assistant with the women's volleyball program. As a player at Greenville, Nichols was a part of two teams that reached the NCAA tournament.
Ray Gooden is the new coach at North Central after a April 29 announcement. Gooden has coaching experience at a variety of collegiate, national, and international levels, most recently serving as the head women's volleyball coach at Northern Illinois. The five-time MAC Coach of the Year won 357 matches, the most in program history. A graduate of Ohio State with a bachelor's degree in economics, Gooden played for the Buckeyes' varsity and club teams from 1990-94.
Wheaton announced Eric Plunkett as its new head coach on Jan. 26. Plunkett comes to Wheaton from Gardner-Webb where he had served as the head volleyball coach since 2021, where his 2023 squad accomplished the second-highest regular season win total in program history. Prior to his tenure at Gardner-Webb, Plunkett was an associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Illinois State. Plunkett earned his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from Cal Baptist. Plunkett was the starting setter at CBU for three seasons.
Women’s Tennis
Elmhurst announced the hiring of Chris Harrison as Director of Tennis for the EU men's and women's tennis programs on July 23. A 2016 graduate of Elmhurst, Harrison rejoins the Bluejays after serving as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Waubonsee in Sugar Grove, Ill for one season. One of the most decorated players in Elmhurst men's tennis history, Harrison was a key component of Elmhurst's back-to-back CCIW Championships in 2013 and 2014, earning a pair of First Team All-CCIW accolades in 2015 and 2016.
Nate Boatright was elevated to men’s and women’s tennis head coach at North Central on June 13 after serving as interim head men's tennis coach last spring. This past season, the men's tennis team made their second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance by earning the CCIW's automatic bid after an undefeated league schedule. On the women's side, the Cardinals extended their CCIW winning streak to 46 matches in a row. Boatright was an assistant coach at his alma mater Sul Ross State (Texas) where he also played Division III tennis, graduating in 2018 with degrees in political science and history.
