Women’s Track Notebook: Records Fall as Championship Prep Continues

NAPERVILLE —The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) women’s indoor track & field slate featured multiple school records, conference-leading marks and movement on the NCAA Division III performance lists during meets held last weekend. 
 
Student-athletes competed at sites including the Chicagoland Indoor Championships in Naperville, the Grand Valley State University Big Meet in Allendale, Mich. and a multi-team meet hosted by Ripon.
 
Long Jumping Into the National Spotlight
At the Chicagoland Indoor Championships last Friday, Elmhurst freshman Chloe Selmer won the long jump with a leap of 5.93 meters (19' 5.5"), establishing a program record. Selmer’s mark leads the CCIW performance list, ranks third nationally in NCAA Division III, and was three centimeters shy of the all-time CCIW record. Selmer was named the CCIW Women’s Indoor Field Student-Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
 
Also in the horizontal jumps, Elmhurst junior Paulina Tinajero set a program record while winning the triple jump at 11.78 meters (38' 7.75"). Tinajero’s performance moved her to sixth on the NCAA Division III national list.
 
Huber Hauls It in Allendale
At the GVSU Big Meet on Friday, Illinois Wesleyan junior Mackenzie Huber posted a conference-leading win in the 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 2:12.37. Huber’s time moved her to seventh on the NCAA Division III national qualifying list and earned her CCIW Women’s Indoor Track Student-Athlete of the Week honors.
 
Illinois Wesleyan also recorded two event wins at the Roger Haynes Invitational on Saturday, highlighted by a victory in the women’s 4x400-meter relay. The quartet of Bella Gonzalez, Caroline Hill, Corrina Fassino and Jordynn Griffin finished in 4:01.47.
 
Moeller Makes Quick Work of the Record Books
Competing at the Chicagoland Indoor Championships, North Central freshman Dylan Moeller broke the program varsity and freshman records in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:01.37, the school’s fastest mark in the event since 2019. Moeller also anchored North Central’s freshman distance medley relay to a win and a program freshman record of 12:34.36, joining Molly Sheridan, Kate Schmidthuber and Giselle Alcala.
 
In the field, NCC junior Gwen Berenyi won the pole vault by clearing a season-best 3.83 meters (12' 6.75"). Berenyi’s mark leads the CCIW list and ranks 13th nationally. North Central also won the 4x400-meter relay as Alivia Henkel, Cali Minkie, Ciré Smith and Zara Uvakova posted a time of 3:58.73.
 
Vikings Navigate a Sub-25 Sprint in Michigan

At the GVSU Big Meet, North Park senior Riana Hayes won the 200-meter dash in 24.87 seconds, the top time in the CCIW this season. Hayes also placed third in the 60-meter dash at 7.66 seconds, while her season-best 7.64 continues to lead the conference and ranks 12th nationally.
 
North Park freshman Marley Gandee also competed in the mile at the meet, finishing in 5:23.80.
 
Pioneers Claim the Top Spot in Ripon
Carroll won a multi-team meet at Ripon last Saturday with 108 points, edging St. Norbert (107.5) and Viterbo (107) in the team standings. Carroll’s Hana Smith won the 400-meter dash in 1:00.78, with teammate Rianna Schultz finishing second.
 
Carroll’s relay group also set a school record in the women’s 4x400-meter relay, as Tirzah Losos, Cady Carlson, Rianna Schultz and Hana Smith combined for the top time. The Pioneers added a win in the distance medley relay, while freshman Jenna Weis placed second in the pole vault.
 
High Marks and Heavy Throws in Whitewater
At the Midwest Elite Invitational last weekend, Wheaton junior Grace Crowder set an indoor program record in the high jump at 1.69 meters (5' 6.5"), a mark that ranks seventh on the NCAA Division III list. Wheaton senior Ashtin Roy also established a school record in the pole vault by clearing 3.23 meters (10' 7").
 
For Carthage, Madison Payne placed second in both the shot put (13.10 meters) and the weight throw (16.06 meters). Payne and teammate Lillian Townsend currently hold the top two spots on the CCIW shot put performance list. Augustana junior Keira Nelson also posted a season-best in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:39.15.
 
The Final Tune-Up Schedule

Conference teams will close the regular season with meets on Feb. 20-21 ahead of the CCIW Indoor Championships. 
 
On Friday, Augustana is scheduled to compete at the Sol Butler Classic in Dubuque, Iowa (3 p.m.), while Elmhurst and North Central will host/compete at the F. Lee Slick Invitational in Naperville (4:30 p.m.). Illinois Wesleyan, Millikin and North Park are slated to meet in Bloomington for the Friday Night Tri (4:30 p.m.).
 
On Saturday, Carthage will compete at the Parkside Classic in Kenosha, and Carroll is scheduled for the UW-Oshkosh Titan Challenge in Oshkosh.
