NAPERVILLE — The mid-March portion of the season has marked a transition period for College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) men’s tennis programs, as teams conclude spring break travel and begin to settle into the conference portion of the schedule.
The 500 Club: Lindsley Hits Rare Air in Orlando
Carthage closed its spring break trip to Orlando with a perfect 6-0 record after posting victories over Washington (Md.), 4-3, and Calvin, 5-2, last Friday. The win over Calvin marked the 500th career victory for head coach Brady Lindsley, as the Firebirds improved to 12-2 overall entering the conference portion of their schedule.
Against Washington, Carthage secured the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Luca Okino and Victor Pimenta earned a 6-4 win at the second flight, while Ethan Foucheaux and Francisco Silveira matched that score at No. 3. In singles play, Silveira posted a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 1 and Linus Bangert added a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 4. The deciding point came from Cyriac Cayuela at No. 3, where he rallied from a set down for a 2-6, 6-4, 10-3 victory.
In the milestone win over Calvin, the Firebirds swept doubles play to take early control of the match. Finn Morris and Diego Silva earned a 6-4 win at No. 1, Okino and Pimenta won 6-1 at No. 2, and Foucheaux and Silveira followed with a 6-2 result at No. 3. Carthage then received singles wins from Foucheaux at No. 6, Okino at No. 4, Bangert at No. 3 and Pimenta at No. 5 to secure the 5-2 team result.
Great Dane: Bangert’s Perfect Week Bolsters Firebirds
Carthage freshman Linus Bangert was named the CCIW Men’s Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week last Tuesday after completing an unbeaten week during the Firebirds’ Orlando trip. A native of Bagsværd, Denmark, Bangert finished 6-0 in singles play from Monday through Friday, contributing at three different spots in the lineup.
Bangert opened the week with victories over Wabash and Cornell, winning 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, respectively. He followed with straight-set wins over Piedmont and St. Scholastica at No. 4, allowing just two combined games across those two matches. Bangert closed the trip with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Washington at No. 4 and a 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 decision against Calvin at No. 3, helping clinch the win that gave Lindsley his 500th career victory.
Decatur’s Double Feature: Big Blue Sweep Toward Conference Lead
Millikin opened conference action last week while continuing a busy road stretch. The Big Blue went 3-1 across four matches, including a pair of 7-0 non-conference sweeps last Saturday in Jacksonville, Ill., against Illinois Valley and Illinois College, as well as a 7-0 conference win over Elmhurst.
In the win over Illinois Valley, Millikin claimed the doubles point behind victories from Gillian Nahum and Jorge Aura, Harry Masterman and Eduardo Vargas, and Nils Fischer and Thomas Tartari. The Big Blue then completed the singles sweep with wins from Nahum, Tartari, Masterman, Aura, Fischer and Elijah Aumann.
Later in the day against Illinois College, Millikin again posted a 7-0 result, with doubles wins from Nahum and Aura, Masterman and Vargas, and Fischer and Tartari before singles victories from Nahum, Vargas, Tartari, Masterman, Aura and Fischer.
Earlier in the week, Millikin split a two-match day in the Chicago area. The Big Blue dropped a 6-1 decision to Judson, with Nahum providing the lone point at No. 1 singles, but rebounded with a 7-0 shutout of Elmhurst to open CCIW play at 1-0. Tartari and Matthew Kordesh, along with Aura and Fischer, helped secure the doubles point, while Kordesh and Fischer each recorded 6-0, 6-0 singles victories. Aura also added a straight-set win at No. 2, and Aumann earned a 7-6, 7-5 decision at No. 4.
Orlando Auditions: Titans Test New Look Under the Sun
Illinois Wesleyan used its spring break trip to evaluate lineup combinations and doubles pairings across three scheduled days of competition. The Titans opened the trip with a 6-1 loss to Coe last Sunday, where freshman Will Ehrlich accounted for the team’s point with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 5 singles.
IWU responded the following day with a 7-0 sweep of Edgewood. The match featured several new doubles pairings, including Thad Dillow and Griffin Hammond at No. 1, who earned their first win together this season with a 6-4 result. Ben Vigneri and Ehrlich teamed up for a 6-2 win at No. 2, while Ian Turnbull and Truman Raher completed the sweep with a 7-6 result at No. 3. In singles play, all six Titans won in straight sets, highlighted by a 6-0, 6-0 performance from Dillow at No. 3.
The trip concluded with a 7-0 loss to Bethel on Tuesday. Hammond came closest to earning a point for the Titans, pushing his No. 3 singles match to a deciding set before falling 6-3, 5-7, 11-9. Illinois Wesleyan’s scheduled match against Crown on Wednesday was canceled.
Hawkeye State Harvest: Vikings Pluck Road Win in Iowa City
Augustana moved to 3-3 overall with a 6-1 non-conference victory over Central last Saturday in Iowa City. The Vikings opened the match by sweeping doubles competition, beginning with a 7-6 (5) win from Aingeru Garcia and Jorge Marcelo at No. 1. Santiago Diaz and Saman Rezaeyan added a 6-3 decision at No. 2, while Facundo Feldman and Arturo Asensio Moreno posted a 6-2 win at No. 3.
In singles action, Diaz recovered from a first-set loss to win 1-6, 6-1, 10-1 at No. 1. Augustana also received straight-set victories from Rezaeyan at No. 2, Marcelo at No. 3 and Garcia at No. 4. Feldman completed the scoring with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Naperville Nightcaps and Island Flights: The Road Ahead
The upcoming slate includes spring break competition for Augustana, along with a pair of matches at the Naperville Tennis Club involving North Central.
On Friday, North Central is scheduled to host Judson at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Cardinals will welcome Carthage for a 5 p.m. conference matchup. Augustana then continues its trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C., with matches against Carleton and Lawrence on Monday, followed by DePauw and Oberlin on Tuesday and Wisconsin-Whitewater on Wednesday.
Millikin is set for two matches in St. Louis, Mo. next Wednesday against Missouri Baptist at 11 a.m. and Webster at 3:30 p.m.
