Titans Earn No. 8 Ranking in Latest National Men’s Golf Poll

NORMAN, Okla. — Illinois Wesleyan was listed No. 8 in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll, released Friday morning. The Titans, who were ranked sixth in the previous poll released earlier this month, received 275 points in the national voting.

The ranking followed IWU’s performance at the Jekyll Island Intercollegiate Invitational, held March 20-22 in Jekyll Island, Ga. Competing in a field that included 15 nationally-ranked top-25 teams, the Titans tied for seventh place with a 54-hole score of 849, finishing 15-under par with rounds of 280, 285 and 284.

Pablo Castro led the Titans’ lineup with a career-best showing. The sophomore from Palatine, Ill. finished tied for third individually at 12-under par and recorded three consecutive rounds in the 60s. His 54-hole total of 204 stands as the second-lowest score in program history.

Senior Michael Spitzer also finished under par, tying for 17th place at five-under with a total of 211. Juney Bai, a senior from Mokena, Ill., tied for 29th place at three-under par with a 213.

Huntingdon remained the unanimous No. 1 team in the poll, followed by Washington and Lee, Carnegie Mellon, Emory and Sewanee. Methodist was ranked sixth, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps seventh, Illinois Wesleyan eighth, Mary Hardin-Baylor ninth and Kenyon 10th.

Illinois Wesleyan is scheduled to return to competition Friday and Saturday, April 3-4, when it hosts the IWU Invite at Weibring Golf Course and Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Ill.
